Tigers Bolster Rotation with Chris Paddack in Deal with Twins

So here’s the latest buzz from the MLB trade scene — the Detroit Tigers are making moves to strengthen their starting rotation, and they just pulled off a deal with a familiar AL Central rival. According to sources, the Tigers have acquired right-handed pitchers Chris Paddack and Randy Dobnak from the Minnesota Twins. The deal hasn’t been officially confirmed by either team just yet, but it’s already gaining attention ahead of Thursday’s trade deadline.

In exchange, Minnesota is set to receive Enrique Jimenez, a Minor League catcher who’s currently ranked as the Tigers' No. 14 prospect. Jimenez is young and promising, so there’s a clear investment in the Twins’ future here, especially as they try to reshape a roster that’s currently sitting in fourth place in the AL Central with a 50-55 record.

As for Chris Paddack, he’s a name many fans will recognize. The 29-year-old righty is in his seventh MLB season and is slated to become a free agent after this year. He’s logged 111 innings this season with a 4.95 ERA and 83 strikeouts. However, his strikeout rate — just 17.6% — is the lowest of his career, which might raise a few eyebrows. Still, Paddack brings experience and depth, which could be vital as Detroit tries to maintain its lead in the division. He’ll likely slot in behind the Tigers’ current rotation core: Tarik Skubal, Jack Flaherty, Casey Mize, and Reese Olson.

Now, Dobnak is more of a depth piece at this point. He’s spent the majority of the year in Triple-A with a 7.12 ERA across 17 games, 10 of them starts. He’s had one appearance in the majors this year, going 5 1/3 innings in relief back in March. While his career MLB ERA sits at 4.86, he hasn’t been a regular big-league contributor in recent seasons.

This move could be just the beginning, especially for the Twins, who may still look to make more trades. Names like Joe Ryan, Jhoan Duran, and Griffin Jax have popped up in rumors, though since they’re under team control past 2025, it’s likely Minnesota would demand a hefty return.

In any case, this deal sends a clear signal — the Tigers are going for it, and they’re not waiting until the last minute to reinforce their roster.
