Timbers Dominate Atlético de San Luis in Leagues Cup Opener

The Portland Timbers kicked off their Leagues Cup 2025 campaign in emphatic fashion, hosting Mexico’s Atlético de San Luis at Providence Park in what turned out to be a statement-making performance. The match, played on Wednesday night, wasn’t just the start of group play—it was a show of force, with the Timbers cruising to a stunning 4-0 victory in front of a fired-up home crowd.

This marked the Timbers’ third appearance in the Leagues Cup, and with the tournament offering a pathway to the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup—and even a shot at the FIFA Club World Cup—every game carries real weight. Portland came out like they understood that perfectly. Less than a minute in, David Da Costa found the back of the net, setting the tone for the evening. From there, it was all Timbers.

Kevin Kelsy followed with a towering header for the second goal, Ariel Lassiter added a third, and Felipe Mora rounded it out with a powerful strike that ricocheted in off the crossbar. Each goal was celebrated by the roaring crowd at Providence Park, many of whom had also come out to see the largest tifo display in MLS history, unveiled as part of the club’s 50th season celebration.

While Portland’s attacking firepower stole the spotlight, their defense was just as solid. Atlético de San Luis, playing in Portland for the first time, never really got going. Known for their ties to Spanish powerhouse Atlético de Madrid and featuring talents like French striker Sebastian Lamonge and Uruguayan defender Juana Sanabria, San Luis was kept quiet all night long. The Timbers back line shut down threats early, and goalkeeper Aljaž Ivačič didn’t have much to worry about.

With this win, Portland took a big first step in their group, which also includes Querétaro FC and Club América—two more Mexican teams with a lot of pedigree. And while past Leagues Cup runs saw the Timbers bow out in the Round of 32, this year feels different. There’s momentum, experience, and now, real confidence.

The game was broadcast on FS1 and streamed live on MLS Season Pass through Apple TV, so fans across the U.S. and beyond could tune in. And if you missed it, replays, highlights, and match coverage are all up on the Matchcenter page.

With a packed stadium, a dominant performance, and their sights set on bigger prizes, the Portland Timbers have officially arrived in the Leagues Cup 2025—and they’ve made it loud and clear that they’re not here to play around.
