Tragedy at Gabriel House: 9 Killed in Fall River Assisted Living Fire
Last night was one of those nights that leaves a community stunned and heartbroken. A horrific fire broke out at the Gabriel House Assisted Living Facility in Fall River, Massachusetts, claiming the lives of nine residents and leaving over 30 others injured. It's a tragedy that no one could have seen coming — the kind that turns an ordinary summer night into a nightmare.
The fire started around 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 13, 2025. When firefighters arrived, the front of the building was already consumed by flames. Smoke filled the air, and what they encountered was a scene of chaos and desperation. Residents, many elderly and unable to move quickly, were hanging out of windows, screaming for help. Their cries echoed through the night as rescue crews rushed in.

About 50 firefighters battled the five-alarm blaze, doing everything in their power to save lives. But despite their brave and immediate efforts, nine people tragically lost their lives. Some died on site, others succumbed to their injuries after being rushed to nearby hospitals. More than 30 individuals were hospitalized, including five firefighters who suffered minor injuries. One person remains in critical condition.
It’s hard to grasp the emotional weight of this. Many of the residents had built close bonds not just with each other, but with the staff who cared for them. One maintenance worker, Nelson Gonzalez, shared a heartbreaking memory of his last interaction with some of the residents — including one who told him, “Tomorrow’s not guaranteed.” That resident is now among those who passed away.
The facility housed around 70 people, and the full scope of damage, both physical and emotional, is still being assessed. Governor Maura Healey called it a tragedy and promised a full investigation, pledging the support of the state to the people of Fall River. Mayor Paul Coogan and Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon praised the heroism of first responders and expressed deep sorrow for the lives lost.
Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire. For now, families are grieving, a community is shaken, and many are left wondering how such devastation could happen so quickly.
This wasn’t just a building that burned. These were people’s parents, grandparents, friends — lives with stories, memories, and connections. And while the fire is out, the impact will linger for a long time.
