Tragedy Strikes Dhaka as Military Jet Crashes into School, Killing 19
It’s a dark and heartbreaking moment for Bangladesh. On what was supposed to be a regular school day, a catastrophic event unfolded in the skies over Dhaka. A Bangladesh Air Force training jet, an F-7 aircraft, crashed directly into the Milestone School and College campus in the Diabari area of Uttara, turning a place of learning into a site of devastation and mourning.
The crash occurred around 1:00 PM local time, shortly after the plane took off for a routine training flight. Tragically, the jet encountered a mechanical failure and, despite the pilot’s attempts to divert the aircraft to a less populated area, it slammed into a two-story school building filled with students and staff. Flames, smoke, and debris quickly engulfed the scene, as terrified children, teachers, and bystanders screamed and fled for safety.
As of now, at least 19 people have been confirmed dead, including the pilot, Flight Lieutenant Md. Taukir Islam. More than 160 others were injured, many of them schoolchildren. Hospitals across Dhaka are working around the clock to treat the wounded, with dozens suffering from severe burns and trauma. According to reports, at least 83 individuals are hospitalized, some in critical condition. The emotional toll on the families affected is beyond words.

Witnesses describe the moment as surreal and horrifying. One student said he saw the jet hit the building “right in front of my eyes.” Teachers recounted the sound of a massive explosion and the sudden eruption of fire and smoke. Parents were present at the campus when the crash happened, and many are among the casualties.
Emergency crews responded swiftly, battling the blaze and combing through charred rubble in hopes of finding survivors. Crowds gathered on rooftops to watch the rescue operation, stunned by the magnitude of the disaster. The government has since declared a national day of mourning. Flags will fly at half-mast across the country, and special prayers will be held for those who lost their lives.
Interim leader Muhammad Yunus expressed deep sorrow and pledged full support for victims and their families. In a message posted on X (formerly Twitter), he called this “a moment of profound pain for the nation” and urged all authorities to give the highest priority to medical care and investigation efforts.
An official inquiry has already been launched to determine the cause of the crash. While initial findings point to mechanical failure, the full picture is yet to emerge. For now, Bangladesh grieves — united in shock and sorrow over a tragedy that has left a permanent scar on a community, and a reminder of the fragile line between routine and disaster.
This devastating event has left the entire nation reeling. As the families of victims begin the long process of healing, Bangladesh comes together to mourn, to support, and to demand answers.
