Trey Lance Shines as Chargers Dominate Lions in Hall of Fame Game
The NFL preseason is officially underway, and it kicked off with quite a statement from quarterback Trey Lance. In the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, Lance threw two touchdown passes and led the Los Angeles Chargers to a commanding 34–7 victory over the Detroit Lions. It was a performance that reminded fans why Lance was once drafted third overall—and why he may still have a lot left in the tank.
Now on his third team in five seasons, Lance looked comfortable, confident, and in control. He completed 13 of 20 passes for 120 yards and found the end zone twice, including a perfectly placed 5-yard touchdown pass on fourth down and a crisp 15-yard strike to KeAndre Lambert-Smith right before halftime. While it’s just preseason, it felt like a breakout moment for a player still trying to find his place in the league.
Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh, who rested many starters including Justin Herbert, had high praise for Lance, saying he “played calm, cool, and collected” while managing the offense efficiently. Rookie running back Omarion Hampton and others also got reps, giving fans a good look at L.A.’s depth chart.

On the Lions’ side, most of their stars, including Jared Goff and Amon-Ra St. Brown, were sidelined. Coach Dan Campbell’s group struggled, turning the ball over five times and never finding a rhythm. Backup quarterback Kyle Allen threw two interceptions, and Hendon Hooker added another. The lone bright spot was a short touchdown run from Craig Reynolds, but Detroit was never really in the game.
The matchup opened with a somber moment of silence in honor of the victims of a recent shooting near NFL headquarters. Increased security surrounded Tom Benson Stadium, reminding everyone that real life continues outside the football bubble.
Despite the sloppy play and rusty starts—which are pretty typical for the first preseason game—there were glimpses of what’s to come. The Chargers capitalized early on a special teams miscue, converting a fumble recovery into a touchdown within minutes. Later, they took advantage of yet another botched punt to add a field goal.
The night also featured excitement off the field, as fans eagerly awaited Saturday’s Hall of Fame induction. NFL legends like Antonio Gates and Jared Allen will be enshrined this weekend, adding to the celebratory atmosphere.
All in all, the Chargers left Canton with confidence, while the Lions left with homework. And for Trey Lance, it might just be the fresh start he’s been waiting for.
