West Indies Crash Out After Spirited Fight from Pollard in Legends Showdown

Well, it was a tough day for the West Indies Champions, and unfortunately, their run in the World Championship of Legends has come to an end. Despite a gutsy knock by Kieron Pollard, the Windies couldn't keep their semifinal hopes alive and ended up finishing at the bottom of the points table after a five-wicket loss to India Champions.

The match was played in Leicester, and West Indies were sent in to bat first. It didn't start off too badly—Pollard came in and absolutely lit up the ground with an unbeaten 74 off just 43 balls. He smashed eight sixes and three boundaries and carried the innings almost singlehandedly. Dwayne Smith chipped in with 20, but other than those two, no one else managed to get into double figures. The Windies slumped to 111 for nine at one point, and it really looked like they wouldn't even bat out their full 20 overs. But Pollard, with some late help from Sheldon Cottrell, added a valuable 33 runs for the last wicket, pushing the total up to 144 for nine. It wasn’t massive, but it gave them something to bowl at.

India, on the other hand, had a clear goal—they needed to chase the target in just over 14 overs to qualify for the semis. And they didn’t just chase it, they did it with style. Stuart Binny was the standout with a blistering 50 not out off only 21 balls. He was named Player of the Match for his all-round performance, having also taken two wickets earlier. Yuvraj Singh added a quick 21, and Yusuf Pathan wrapped things up with an unbeaten 21 off just seven balls. India reached the target in only 13.2 overs, sealing their place in the semifinals and knocking West Indies out.

West Indies’ bowlers did have their moments—Dwayne Smith picked up two early wickets and Bravo also claimed a couple—but there just wasn’t enough pressure to contain India’s counterattack. Piyush Chawla was the most effective with the ball for India, taking three for 18, while Varun Aaron and Binny supported well.

So, with this loss, the Windies ended their campaign with just one win from five matches. India, in contrast, snuck into the semifinals with this big win and will now face Pakistan next. Meanwhile, Australia and South Africa will contest the other semi-final.

A disappointing end for the Windies legends, but a reminder of the fine margins in these T20 contests—especially when a team’s entire tournament hangs on one match.
