Yankees, Mariners Eye McMahon; Padres Stir Trade Pot With Cease Surprise

With the MLB trade deadline looming on July 31, things are heating up across the league, and the rumor mill is in full swing. Teams are maneuvering, evaluating, and, in some cases, throwing curveballs into the trade market. This year, the Yankees and Mariners are setting their sights on the same target: Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon. It’s an interesting play, considering McMahon’s current biceps injury, but don’t let that distract from the fact that he remains an intriguing asset for clubs looking for infield defense and some pop. Despite underwhelming road splits, McMahon shines at Coors Field and offers a steady glove at third — and he’s under contract through 2027 at a relatively reasonable cost.

Now, while the Yankees and Mariners jockey for position in the Wild Card race and chase down McMahon, the Padres are taking a much different — and surprising — approach. Despite holding a Wild Card spot themselves, they’re reportedly exploring the possibility of trading right-handed starter Dylan Cease. Yes, the same Cease who finished fourth in Cy Young voting just last season. Even though his numbers this year haven’t lived up to that performance, the talent is still there. It’s a bold move that could help the Padres plug several roster holes, especially if they follow through on the idea of replacing Cease in the rotation with someone like Charlie Morton from the Orioles.

Elsewhere, Nationals starter MacKenzie Gore — one of the few bright spots from the Juan Soto trade — has popped up in trade chatter. It’s a long shot, but interim GM Mike DeBartolo is reportedly willing to listen. With Gore’s age, control through 2028, and solid numbers this year, it’s no surprise the Cubs and other contenders are circling.

Then there’s Kansas City, who could look to deal Seth Lugo — an All-Star and one of the top-performing starters in baseball this season — but only if they get a “controllable” outfielder in return. Boston’s Jarren Duran is one name that’s been floated, and he’d certainly fit that bill.

And don’t sleep on the Phillies, who are reportedly keeping tabs on Rangers slugger Adolis García. Even though he’s having a down season, García has plenty of power, and Philadelphia could use a strong right-handed bat to complement their lefty-heavy lineup.

So with just days to go before the deadline, we’ve got contenders eyeing the same pieces, surprise names on the trade block, and front offices balancing short-term pushes with long-term strategies. The trade market hasn't exploded — yet — but you can feel the pressure building. We’re in for an exciting ride to the finish.
