49ers Acquire Brian Robinson in Trade with Commanders
The San Francisco 49ers have officially made a move to strengthen their backfield, acquiring running back Brian Robinson Jr. from the Washington Commanders in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round draft pick. The deal, which had been anticipated for days, was finalized with Washington also agreeing to cover part of Robinson’s $3.4 million salary for 2025, the final season of his rookie contract.
This trade didn’t come out of nowhere. Robinson had been held out of Washington’s second preseason game while the team quietly explored options. It was clear the Commanders were ready to move on, and the 49ers, who have been hit with injuries at the running back position, stepped in as the right partner. For San Francisco, the addition of Robinson provides immediate depth behind Christian McCaffrey, their superstar who has dealt with a history of injuries. While McCaffrey is expected to remain the centerpiece, Robinson’s bruising style gives head coach Kyle Shanahan another option for short-yardage situations and goal-line carries.

For Washington, the move signals a transition. The Commanders will lean more heavily on veteran Austin Ekeler as their primary back, with rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt also in line for more opportunities. Robinson, meanwhile, leaves behind three solid seasons in Washington, totaling over 2,300 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns on the ground, plus nearly 600 receiving yards.
What makes Robinson’s journey especially compelling is how it began. Before he even played his first NFL game, his career was almost derailed by tragedy. In the summer of 2022, he was the victim of an attempted carjacking in Washington, D.C., suffering two gunshot wounds to his leg and glute. Remarkably, he recovered in just over a month and made his debut by Week 5 of that season. His resilience became one of the most talked-about storylines in the league, and he quickly earned the respect of teammates and fans alike.
Still, football is a business, and sometimes change is inevitable. By this summer, it had become apparent that Robinson no longer fit into the Commanders’ long-term plans. With a new coaching staff under Dan Quinn and fresh talent in the running back room, the organization chose to send him elsewhere rather than risk losing him for nothing at the end of the season.
For the 49ers, the move feels like a low-risk, high-reward opportunity. Shanahan’s offensive system has a reputation for turning overlooked or undervalued backs into productive players. Robinson will now get a chance to contribute to one of the league’s most dynamic teams, and the timing couldn’t be better as San Francisco continues to deal with injuries across its roster.
So, Brian Robinson heads west, bringing toughness, experience, and a story of perseverance to San Francisco. And for Washington, the page is turned, with a late-round pick secured and their running game moving in a new direction. This is one of those trades that makes sense for both sides, and it sets the stage for an intriguing season ahead.
