Active Shooter Incident Shakes Emory University Campus
Earlier today, the normally calm atmosphere around Emory University in Atlanta was thrown into chaos when the school reported an active shooter near its campus. The alert went out quickly with urgent instructions — “RUN, HIDE, FIGHT. Avoid the area” — signaling the seriousness of the threat. Within moments, police from multiple agencies, including DeKalb County, Atlanta Police, and campus security, swarmed the area. Even the FBI confirmed they were en route, ready to assist.
The reported shooting was centered around the Emory Point shopping area, specifically near a CVS that sits just across from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) headquarters. For safety, the CDC campus itself was placed on lockdown. Although law enforcement later confirmed the CDC had not been breached, the proximity to such a high-profile facility heightened public concern.

Witnesses described hearing multiple bursts of gunfire — one deli worker compared it to “fireworks going off, one right after the other.” Businesses quickly locked their doors, sheltering customers and staff inside. Others, like Randy Gold, a man leaving Emory University Hospital with his father, recalled seeing doctors, nurses, and even valet attendants running and shouting about an active shooter. He and his father found refuge in a hallway office as the hospital went into lockdown.
Parents trying to reach a nearby daycare were blocked from entering the area, as a large swath of the surrounding neighborhood was sealed off. Aerial footage showed police helicopters circling low overhead, while officers and even firefighters in ballistic vests moved through the streets. For over an hour, residents and students were ordered to shelter in place while officers swept the scene.
Georgia’s attorney general and governor both issued statements condemning the violence and praising first responders for their rapid action. Governor Brian Kemp noted that this was the second shooting incident in the state within a week, emphasizing the courage of law enforcement rushing toward danger.
Eventually, the shelter-in-place order was lifted, though Emory University cautioned that a “police emergency” was still ongoing at Emory Point. Details about the shooter’s identity and motive have not yet been fully released, but NBC News later reported the suspect had been killed and an officer injured during the incident.
What began as a routine summer day turned into a tense and frightening ordeal for the Emory community, serving as a stark reminder of how quickly normalcy can be shattered. For many students, staff, and residents, the sound of those gunshots — and the scramble to safety — will not be forgotten anytime soon.
