Alaska State Fair Opens with Food, Fun, and Big Entertainment
Alaska’s summer is winding down, but it’s going out with one of the state’s most beloved traditions: the Alaska State Fair in Palmer. The 2025 fair has just opened and will run until September 1, taking Tuesdays and Wednesdays off each week. This event has been a summer staple for generations, and once again, it’s bringing together food, rides, music, exhibits, and that special sense of community that only the fair can deliver.
One of the big draws this year is that parking is free again, something families and fairgoers have appreciated for three years in a row. The popular Alaska State Fair train is also back for its second straight year, making it easier than ever to get to the fairgrounds. Special Days continue to be a highlight, where discounts are offered for groups like military members, seniors, and families, making it more accessible for everyone.

As always, there’s no shortage of things to see. For example, Cirque Ma’Ceo is performing daily with an equestrian-themed show that blends acrobatics, dance, and aerial artistry. Over at the Kid Zone, Brad’s World Reptiles and the Glow Zone are drawing crowds with exotic animals and fascinating bioluminescent fish. Creativity is also being celebrated through contests—like the scarecrow competition on Friday and the duct tape art contest on Saturday, both of which challenge people to make imaginative creations under pressure.
Cultural and educational experiences are woven into the lineup too. The Da Vinci Exhibition is open daily, showcasing the genius of Leonardo da Vinci through his inventions, machines, and artworks. On Saturday and Sunday, the Native Youth Olympics are being held, highlighting traditional tests of skill and endurance passed down through generations. Performances by the Anguyak Dancers and the ever-popular Puppy Pals show add even more variety.
Of course, no fair is complete without competition, and this weekend also features the Great Alaskan Coffee Roaster showdown, where visitors can sip and vote for their favorite brews, and the Horse Costume Contest, which always provides colorful entertainment. Add in lumberjack shows, magicians, and live demonstrations, and you’ve got entertainment for all ages.
Music fans are also in for a treat. Medium Build is kicking things off on Friday night, followed by a sold-out Rainbow Kitten Surprise concert on Saturday. Sunday belongs to Weird Al Yankovic, whose comedy and music continue to draw massive crowds, and Monday wraps up with Christian artist Chris Tomlin, whose reserved seating has already sold out.
