América Falls Behind as Minnesota Strikes Early in Leagues Cup Thriller
The second matchday of the Leagues Cup 2025 brought with it high expectations and even higher stakes for Club América. Having already dropped points in their debut against Real Salt Lake — a 2-2 draw that ended in a heartbreaking loss during penalties — the pressure was on. The Eagles needed a win to keep their hopes alive in a fiercely competitive group, but standing in their way was a red-hot Minnesota United side fresh off a dominant 4-1 victory over Querétaro.
From the very start, it was clear Minnesota wasn’t just here to participate — they came to make a statement. And they did exactly that within the first 20 minutes. A seemingly harmless long ball from Joaquín Pereyra turned deadly when Nigerian striker Tani Oluwaseyi shrugged off defender Igor Lichnovsky, raced into the box, and finished with power. The ball kissed the post on its way in, leaving goalkeeper Luis Malagón rooted. Just like that, América was down 0-1, and the Shell Energy Stadium erupted with the cheers of the Minnesota faithful.

But América, known for their resilience, didn’t stay quiet for long. Midway through the first half, a dangerous cross from Álvaro Fidalgo found Raúl Zúñiga in the box, whose pressure caused a Minnesota defender to inadvertently head the ball into his own net. It was an ugly goal — but a lifeline nonetheless. The scoreboard read 1-1, and the Eagles were very much back in the fight.
However, moments later, another defensive lapse cost América dearly. A poor clearance gifted the ball back to Minnesota, and with quick touches, Bongokuhle Hlongwane found himself perfectly positioned to slot the ball home and restore Minnesota’s lead. It was 1-2 before halftime, and América’s backline was visibly rattled.
Despite several promising chances — from Víctor Dávila’s long-range attempts to Henry Martín’s acrobatic efforts — América couldn’t convert their opportunities. Minnesota’s defense remained organized, their keeper, Dayne St. Clair, stayed sharp, and time kept ticking against the Mexican giants.
At this stage in the tournament, every point matters, and América finds themselves dangerously close to the edge. With only one point so far and a handful of other Liga MX teams already ahead in the group standings, the pressure is mounting. Meanwhile, Minnesota looks increasingly confident, blending physicality and pace with clinical finishing — a formula that’s clearly working.
Unless América can regroup quickly, their Leagues Cup journey might be cut short far earlier than expected.
