Arsenal push to sign Leverkusen’s Piero Hincapie amid transfer battle
Arsenal are once again in the thick of transfer window drama, and this time the spotlight is firmly on Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie. The 23-year-old Ecuador international has quickly become one of the most sought-after left-sided defenders in Europe, and reports suggest that Arsenal are making a real push to bring him to the Emirates before the window shuts.
What makes this story particularly interesting is that Hincapie has already been watched closely by Arsenal’s recruitment staff for some time. His ability to play naturally on the left side of central defence, along with his composure and strength on the ball, has made him a standout option for Mikel Arteta’s squad. Arsenal have been looking for depth in this position, especially with the uncertainty surrounding a few of their current defenders.

Now, Hincapie’s contract situation adds another layer to the chase. His deal with Leverkusen runs until 2029, but there is a release clause of €60 million, roughly £52 million. Sources indicate that he is open to leaving Germany this summer, particularly after helping Xabi Alonso’s side to an extraordinary campaign in which Leverkusen won both the Bundesliga and the German Cup without a single defeat. Since joining Leverkusen in 2021, Hincapie has already racked up 166 appearances, making him an experienced option despite his age.
For Arsenal, the financial side of this transfer is a balancing act. They’ve already spent heavily—over £200 million, with some reports putting the figure closer to £275 million when add-ons are included. That means sales are now a necessity before any big move can be finalized. Players like Fabio Vieira, Reiss Nelson, and Oleksandr Zinchenko are being made available, while Jakub Kiwior is in talks with Porto over a loan that could become permanent. If those deals are pushed through, space would be cleared for Hincapie both financially and in terms of squad balance.
If Arsenal do manage to land Hincapie, it would be another statement signing, one that shows Arteta’s determination to build not just a strong starting XI but a squad capable of competing across all competitions. And with Hincapie himself keen on the move, the final days of the window could get very interesting. Whether Arsenal can strike a deal below the full release clause remains to be seen, but one thing is certain—the Gunners are serious about strengthening their defensive line, and Hincapie is at the very top of their list.
