Bayern survive Augsburg scare but face Nicolas Jackson transfer chaos
Bayern München managed to grab their second Bundesliga win of the season, but the evening in Augsburg was anything but straightforward. The scoreboard showed a 3:2 victory in the end, keeping Bayern on top of the table with six points, yet the performance left fans and coaches alike with plenty of nerves. And as if the late drama on the pitch was not enough, the club’s transfer headache involving Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson overshadowed the celebrations.
Let’s start with the game itself. It could have been a dream start for Bayern after only 23 seconds, when Luis DÃaz – the €67.5 million new signing – had the goal at his mercy. Three meters in front of an empty net, he somehow failed to connect properly. That set the tone for a match where Bayern looked dominant but still fragile. Luckily for them, Serge Gnabry settled the nerves with a fine header in the 28th minute after a pinpoint cross from Harry Kane. Then, deep into first-half stoppage time, DÃaz redeemed himself, sliding home a low pass from Konrad Laimer for 2:0.

For Augsburg and their fiery coach Sandro Wagner, it was a tough first half. Their key man Marius Wolf even had to leave with a knee injury before the break. And things seemed to get worse right after halftime, when Michael Olise made it 3:0, calmly finishing after sending Keven Schlotterbeck the wrong way. At that point, most people thought Bayern would cruise. But Wagner’s Augsburg team refused to fold.
First, Kristijan Jakić smashed home a volley in the 53rd minute to make it 1:3. Then, with Bayern starting to wobble again, Mert Kömür slid a shot into the far corner in the 76th, cutting the deficit to just one. Suddenly, the Allianz Arena giants were hanging on for dear life. Augsburg pushed forward, roared on by their coach on the touchline, but Bayern just about survived. The closing minutes got ugly, though: defender Sacha Boey collided violently with Robin Fellhauer, who had to be stretchered off wearing a neck brace.
And while Bayern’s players breathed a sigh of relief at the final whistle, the real storm may still be off the pitch. Nicolas Jackson, who was supposed to join on loan from Chelsea, had even landed in Munich. But due to an injury to Chelsea’s Liam Delap, the London club is now pulling the plug on the deal. Without Chelsea’s final signature, Bayern’s sporting director Max Eberl admitted the transfer is in serious danger. With the transfer deadline looming on Monday night, Bayern could be left empty-handed in attack despite Jackson’s willingness to stay.
So yes, Bayern won. They are leaders after two games. But the fragility shown on the field, combined with the uncertainty around their striker situation, means the week ahead will be very tense in Munich.
