Blue Bombers Face Alouettes in High-Stakes Week 12 Clash
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are in Montreal for a Week 12 matchup against the Alouettes, and the stage is set for one of the more intriguing games of the season. Not because of playoff implications just yet, but because of the drama surrounding the Alouettes’ quarterback situation. Montreal will be starting James Morgan, a player who less than a year ago was released from their practice roster. Now, with three other quarterbacks sidelined, the Alouettes are turning to Morgan as their fourth starter of the year.
Morgan’s story almost feels like something out of a sports movie. Drafted by the New York Jets in 2020, he bounced around NFL practice squads, then landed in the USFL with the Pittsburgh Maulers. When that league folded, Montreal gave him a shot in 2024. But even then, he didn’t play a snap until last week, when he was suddenly thrown into action against the BC Lions. In that game, he logged three quarters, passed for over 200 yards, threw a touchdown, and showed enough grit to convince his coaches he was ready. Now, just days later, he’s making his first CFL start under the bright lights at Molson Stadium.

Head coach Jason Maas has been vocal about Morgan’s preparation. He said the quarterback treated every day at training camp like he was the starter—mapping plays with receivers in the morning, watching film alone after lunch, and staying late to review calls. That work ethic hasn’t gone unnoticed, and now the Alouettes need all of it to pay off, especially with so many injuries piling up. Montreal isn’t just missing quarterbacks; top receivers Austin Mack and Tyson Philpot are out, and their secondary is banged up too. Maas admitted it’s rare, even in his decades in football, to cycle through this many quarterbacks by midseason.
Meanwhile, Winnipeg arrives with some momentum. The Bombers are fresh off a 30–27 win over Ottawa, and while their record sits at 5–4, they’re still viewed as one of the league’s toughest teams. They’ll also get a boost tonight with the debut of running back Peyton Logan, who finally joins the lineup after missing the first half of the season with a leg injury. Logan brings speed and versatility, and even though head coach Mike O’Shea has downplayed how much he’ll be used, fans are eager to see him in action.
Despite Montreal’s injuries, O’Shea has warned his team not to underestimate them. In his words, the Alouettes will “compete their asses off no matter what.” And with Morgan treating this game like the opportunity of a lifetime, there’s every reason to believe the Alouettes will fight hard in front of their home crowd.
So tonight’s game isn’t just another regular-season clash—it’s a test of resilience for Montreal and a chance for Winnipeg to keep building momentum. For James Morgan, it’s the kind of moment every backup dreams about: the chance to prove he belongs, under pressure, with everything on the line.
