BMW Championship 2025: Who’s Leading the FedExCup Race?
The 2025 BMW Championship is underway at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland, and it’s shaping up to be a pivotal event in the FedExCup Playoffs. This is the second leg of the three-event playoff series, and 50 of the best golfers have advanced from the FedEx St. Jude Championship to compete. The excitement isn’t just about the trophy—every stroke counts as players vie for a spot in the Tour Championship, the season’s grand finale.
The course itself has been transformed since the last time the PGA TOUR visited. Caves Valley, designed by Tom Fazio in the early 1990s and recently renovated by his son Logan, has undergone massive changes, including a complete redo of all bunkers and the installation of the PrecisionAire system beneath every green. Par has been reduced from 72 to 70 by turning two previous par-5 holes into long par-4s, while additional yardage and new tees on multiple holes have increased the course to 7,601 yards. Even the par-4 first hole, once 365 yards, now stretches to 481 yards. These changes ensure that even returning players may feel as if they’re teeing off at a brand-new course.

As of the opening round, several players are sharing the lead at 3-under par, including Viktor Hovland, Billy Horschel, Scottie Scheffler, Rickie Fowler, and Jason Day. Sungjae Im, Rory McIlroy, and Sam Burns, all of whom had top-10 finishes at Caves Valley in 2021, are back, but the revamped layout promises new challenges for everyone. With soft conditions expected Thursday due to rain, followed by dry, hot weather through the weekend, players will have to adapt quickly to keep their scores competitive.
The stakes are high, particularly for those on the FedExCup bubble. The top 30 in the standings after this week will secure spots in the Tour Championship at East Lake, along with $550,000 in prize money and a shot at the $10 million grand prize. Quadruple points are on offer, meaning that a player like Xander Schauffele, currently ranked 43rd, could vault into the top 30 with a strong performance. Meanwhile, Scottie Scheffler is guaranteed the $5 million payout for being first in points, but everyone else is fighting to improve or maintain their positions heading into the final event.
In addition to the points battle, all 50 players have already secured entries for the 2026 signature events, including the Masters, the U.S. Open, and The Open Championship, provided traditional qualifying criteria are met. But a high finish this week brings both immediate rewards and momentum heading into the Tour Championship, making every shot critical.
The BMW Championship has always been a test of skill and strategy, and with this year’s renovated course, scorching temperatures, and high-stakes playoff points, it promises to be another unforgettable chapter in the FedExCup Playoffs. The leaderboard is tight, the competition fierce, and the drama guaranteed—this week, golf fans are in for a real treat.
