Bowie’s Brace Secures Hibs’ Opening Day Win at Dundee

So here’s what happened in the Scottish Premiership opener between Dundee and Hibernian — a game that had a bit of everything, from fast goals to nervy defending. Hibernian, still nursing their bruises from a painful midweek Europa League exit to Midtjylland, came to Dens Park needing a morale boost. And thanks to a brilliant first-half display from Kieron Bowie, they got exactly that.

The match started fairly cagey — both sides trying to find their rhythm — but then, boom, Bowie happened. In the 28th minute, a bit of chaos in the Dundee box saw the ball break loose, and the young striker was the quickest to react. With a clinical low strike into the bottom corner, he put Hibs ahead with their very first shot of the game. And just three minutes later, he doubled it. This time, Jordan Obita had a go — his shot was parried by Dundee’s keeper, Jon McCracken — but Bowie was right there to tap home the rebound from close range. Suddenly, Hibs were cruising.

At that point, it looked like Dundee were out of it. Their manager Steven Pressley, already under pressure after a poor League Cup group stage showing, could be seen scribbling away on the sidelines — probably trying to figure out what had gone wrong.

But Dundee weren’t finished yet. In the 36th minute, a defensive slip gave them a way back. Jack Iredale, who had otherwise been solid, lost his footing at the wrong moment. Ashley Hay capitalized, driving into the box and cutting it back perfectly for Finlay Robertson, who slotted it home. That goal gave Dundee a pulse — just a faint one, but it was there.

In the second half, the hosts tried to push for an equalizer, and the energy at Dens Park picked up, especially with over 7,800 fans watching on. But truth be told, Hibs looked the more likely to score again. Josh Campbell had the best chance late on — found completely unmarked at the back post from a corner — but somehow managed to head the ball straight at the keeper.

Despite that miss, Hibs saw the game out well. They dominated possession — nearly 67% — and racked up 15 shots compared to Dundee’s 2. It wasn’t perfect, but it was controlled, and considering the disappointment of Thursday night, this was exactly the bounce-back David Gray’s side needed.

So in the end, Bowie’s quickfire double proved decisive. Hibs took all three points, and Dundee were left with more questions than answers as they start the season rooted to the bottom of the table.
