Bruno Fernandes Slams ‘Lazy’ Man Utd Performance Against Everton
So, Manchester United’s 2-2 draw with Everton in the Premier League Summer Series ended up making more headlines than expected—and not necessarily for the right reasons. After the match, Bruno Fernandes didn’t hold back. He was clearly frustrated and described the team’s performance as “a little bit lazy,” especially given the standards expected at a club like United.
Now, the game itself was full of action. Bruno opened the scoring with a well-taken penalty after Amad Diallo was fouled in the box by Everton’s James Tarkowski. But that early lead didn’t last long. Everton equalized through Iliman Ndiaye, who finished off a quality ball from Idrissa Gueye. Manuel Ugarte got robbed by Mykolenko in the buildup, and United just looked sluggish in transition.

United did bounce back with a brilliant goal from Mason Mount, who curled one past Jordan Pickford after being set up by Fernandes. But again, Everton found a way back. This time it was a chaotic own goal—Amad tried to clear the ball, but it hit Ayden Heaven and went straight into the net. To make matters worse, that whole sequence followed a clash between Fernandes and Ndiaye, which earned both players yellow cards. Not a great look.
Despite the draw, United technically topped the group in the Summer Series, finishing a point ahead of West Ham. But Fernandes was clearly more focused on the bigger picture. He emphasized that while the tour had been positive overall in terms of team bonding and tactics, the performance against Everton just wasn’t up to scratch. In his words, “With laziness, you can pay at any moment.”
He also spoke about the need for more signings. While Bryan Mbeumo—who just joined from Brentford for £71 million—made an exciting debut, Fernandes believes the squad still lacks the depth and quality needed to push everyone to the next level. He’s hoping for “one or two” more new faces before the season kicks off.
Mbeumo, by the way, looked sharp in his 45-minute cameo. He was lively, linked well with Fernandes and Cunha, and even helped win the penalty. He’s clearly a player with pace and purpose, and if his fitness builds, he could become a real asset.
But overall, Fernandes made it clear—United need to shake off last season’s disappointing finish and rediscover their winning mentality. As he put it, this club used to be about winning, and it’s time to bring that culture back.
