Caitlin Clark sidelined again as Fever face Lynx

Caitlin Clark’s rookie season with the Indiana Fever has been anything but smooth. The star guard, who entered the WNBA with massive expectations, has been battling through a string of injuries that have kept her in and out of the lineup. Unfortunately for Fever fans, Clark will not be suiting up this Sunday when Indiana takes on the league-leading Minnesota Lynx in Minneapolis.

Clark has already missed 23 of the team’s 36 games this season, and her current absence comes from a right groin injury suffered back on July 15 during a win over the Connecticut Sun. In the final minute of that game, she made a routine bounce pass to teammate Kelsey Mitchell, but immediately grabbed at her groin in visible pain. She walked off gingerly and hasn’t been back on the court since. While recovering, she also tweaked her ankle earlier this month, which has only added more delays to her return.

For the Fever, the timing has been tough. They’ve dropped five of their last seven games, and at 19–17, they’re trying to hold steady in a competitive playoff race. Clark’s absence has been felt deeply, not just for her scoring but also her playmaking. In the 13 games she’s played this season, she’s averaged 16.5 points, 5 rebounds, and nearly 9 assists per game. That assist number is the second-best in the entire league, only trailing Phoenix’s Alyssa Thomas. Her ability to create offense has been exactly what Indiana needs — but her health has been the roadblock.

This season has almost felt like a stop-and-start rhythm for Clark. Back in May, she suffered a quad injury that forced her to sit out five games. In June, she put together a dominant performance against the Liberty with 32 points and nine assists, only to be sidelined again days later with another groin issue. By July, she was back, but conditioning remained a challenge. And just as she seemed to be settling in, the July 15 groin injury struck, marking her longest absence of the season.

Even the WNBA All-Star festivities in her home city of Indianapolis couldn’t draw her back to the court. Clark, who had been named a team captain and a 3-point contest participant, had to pull out of both events to prioritize rest and recovery. She described the frustration openly, admitting that jumping straight back into high-stakes games without proper buildup has been one of the hardest parts of her season.

Fever head coach Stephanie White has provided updates along the way, noting that Clark has made progress in her rehab and has even been running full-court again. But so far, she hasn’t returned to practice, which remains a key milestone before game action. There’s still no timetable for her return.

For now, Indiana will have to take on the Lynx without their floor general. The Fever’s young star remains on the sidelines, and while her long-term potential is undeniable, the priority has shifted to making sure her body is ready for the grind of the WNBA — not just this season, but the seasons to come.
