Campo Bom Finalizes Flood Debris Disposal

In Campo Bom, the final stage of dealing with the massive amount of waste left behind by the recent flood is now underway. After the heavy rains and flooding hit the city, countless homes were damaged, leaving behind piles of ruined belongings — from furniture and mattresses to clothes and household items. Immediately after the disaster, teams from the Secretariat of Works, Planning and Urban Services, working alongside the Secretariat of the Environment, began the huge task of collecting everything. The damaged materials were taken to a temporary storage site while the next steps were prepared.

The effort was no small feat. Multiple crews and trucks were mobilized to ensure that the operation could run smoothly and quickly. In total, around 3,000 cubic meters of debris were gathered, which, once fully processed, will amount to more than 2,500 tons of waste. The disposal could only be finalized now because it depended on a public bidding process that took place earlier this year.

With the winning company now defined, transportation of all that waste to its final destination has begun. The debris is being moved to a sanitary landfill in Santo Antônio da Patrulha, ensuring that it will be discarded in an environmentally responsible way. This step is crucial, not just to clear the city of the remnants of the flood, but also to prevent health and environmental risks that could arise from improper waste handling.

Residents who lived through the flood know all too well the emotional weight behind those discarded items — pieces of daily life and family memories, now reduced to waste by the force of nature. While the loss is felt deeply, the community can at least take some relief in knowing the waste is being managed safely and efficiently, marking the end of a long cleanup journey.

The city’s coordinated response shows how important it is for public agencies to act together in moments of crisis. The work of the municipal departments, the readiness of the cleanup crews, and the proper planning of waste disposal reflect a commitment not only to restoring normal life but also to doing so with care for the environment.

Campo Bom’s flood recovery is far from over — rebuilding homes, restoring public spaces, and supporting affected families will continue for some time. But by bringing this debris disposal phase to a close, the city takes an important step forward, clearing the path — both literally and figuratively — for the community to rebuild stronger.
