Cillian Murphy Gets Big Boost in James Bond Race
The conversation around who will take over as the next James Bond has been heating up ever since Daniel Craig bowed out of the iconic role. And now, Cillian Murphy, fresh off his Oscar-winning performance in Oppenheimer and beloved for his unforgettable turn as Tommy Shelby in Peaky Blinders , has found himself right at the center of the debate once again.

Murphy has long been rumored as a possible 007, though in recent months Aaron Taylor-Johnson has seemed to be the frontrunner, especially with his cryptic responses to Bond-related questions and even a brand partnership with Omega, the official Bond watchmaker. But this week, Murphy’s chances got a major boost thanks to a ringing endorsement from none other than Brian Cox, the acclaimed Succession actor and current star of Amazon’s Bond-inspired series 007: Road To A Million .
Cox, who will soon reprise his role as The Controller in that series, made it clear that Murphy shouldn’t be ruled out just yet. When asked about who could step into the tux, Cox praised Murphy as “very real” and refreshingly free of pretension. He even admitted that he found the idea of Murphy as Bond “interesting” and worthy of serious consideration.
And Cox isn’t the only big name voicing support. Former Bond himself, Pierce Brosnan, has publicly backed Murphy as well. Brosnan, who played the suave spy across four films from GoldenEye to Die Another Day , has said that Murphy would do a “magnificent job” carrying on the tradition. Coming from someone who’s worn the tuxedo and carried the Walther PPK, that’s about as strong an endorsement as anyone could hope for.
Still, Murphy has been downplaying the speculation himself. At a recent event in Los Angeles, he brushed off the idea by saying he was “a bit too old for that.” And with Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson known for locking their chosen actor into a decade-long commitment, Murphy’s hesitation might not be surprising.
That said, a different opportunity might be waiting for him within the Bond universe. With Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight now involved in writing the next 007 film, speculation has shifted toward Murphy possibly stepping in as a villain instead. In fact, betting markets have already put him as the favorite to take on such a role, even above names like Jared Leto.
So, while it remains uncertain whether Cillian Murphy will ever introduce himself on screen as “Bond, James Bond,” his name isn’t fading from the conversation anytime soon. With powerful industry voices backing him and his reputation at an all-time high, Murphy’s future with the franchise—whether as hero or villain—feels more possible than ever. And for fans, that alone is enough to keep the excitement alive as the world waits to see who will finally inherit the license to kill.
