Clara Tauson Shocks Swiatek to Reach Montreal Quarterfinals

Well, this one’s going to be talked about for a while — Clara Tauson just pulled off what many didn’t see coming. In a fourth-round clash at the National Bank Open in Montreal, she stunned Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek with a straight-sets victory, 7-6(1), 6-3. That win didn’t just end Swiatek’s impressive nine-match winning streak — it also marked the first time Tauson has beaten her in four career meetings. And the timing couldn’t have been sweeter, especially after Tauson was knocked out by Swiatek in the same round at Wimbledon just last month.

The match lasted just under two hours and was played under cool, blustery conditions at IGA Stadium. Tauson came out with something to prove. She didn’t just match Swiatek’s intensity — she outplayed her at crucial moments. In the opening set, after trading breaks, Tauson absolutely dominated the tiebreak, taking it 7-1 thanks to powerful serving and capitalizing on Swiatek’s uncharacteristic errors. The Pole looked visibly frustrated, even heading to the locker room mid-match for a regroup, but that momentum shift had already taken hold.

In the second set, Tauson broke early and held her nerve. Swiatek briefly threatened a comeback, breaking back at 3-4, but then gave away her serve again — this time on a double fault. Tauson didn’t flinch. She closed the match out on her next service game and secured her spot in her second career WTA 1000 quarterfinal, the first being earlier this year in Dubai where she famously upset world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka.

Now, Tauson will face another big test: Madison Keys. Keys is no stranger to big matches and just came off a dramatic win of her own — saving two match points to defeat Karolina Muchova 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. That victory marks Keys’ eighth quarterfinal of the season and her first time making it this far in Montreal since 2016.

Keys had high praise for Tauson, calling her a “fantastic ball striker” with a big serve and power on both wings. And with Tauson yet to drop a set in the tournament, their quarterfinal could be a real fireworks show.

So, all eyes now turn to that matchup. Tauson’s making it clear: she’s not just here to participate — she’s here to take down champions.
