Connor Zilisch’s Victory Turns Painful After Celebration Fall
It was supposed to be one of the happiest moments of Connor Zilisch’s racing career. The 19-year-old had just taken the checkered flag in the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Watkins Glen, and the energy was electric. But what happened next took a shocking turn and turned his celebration into a trip to the hospital.
Right after the win, Zilisch climbed out of his car, clearly ready to soak in the glory. His right foot was planted on the roof, his left on the driver’s side window, when it appeared he slipped. His feet became tangled in the safety netting, throwing him off balance. In an instant, his head was driven toward the pavement, and the impact looked rough.

He didn’t move right away, and trackside medical staff rushed in. Caution turned to concern as he was carefully placed on a backboard and taken by ambulance for evaluation. The CW broadcast reported that Zilisch was able to talk with medical personnel, and NBC Sports’ Dustin Long noted he even sat up in the ambulance on the way to the infield care center. Still, NASCAR confirmed he was transported to a local hospital for further testing, though they assured fans he was “awake and alert.”
Later that evening, JR Motorsports shared that Zilisch had been released from the hospital. Then, Zilisch himself posted an update on social media, thanking fans for their concern. The scans on his head came back clear, but the fall had fractured his collarbone. In his own words, he was “thankful it wasn’t any worse” and grateful to the medics for their quick attention.
Unfortunately, the injury meant a change in his racing plans. He had been slated to compete in the following day’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Watkins Glen for Trackhouse Racing, but the team announced late Saturday night that the No. 87 car would be withdrawn. In their statement, they wished him a speedy recovery.
For a young driver making waves in the sport, the day was both a milestone and a reminder of how quickly things can change in motorsports. From victory lane to the ER in a matter of minutes, Zilisch’s story will be remembered not just for the win, but for the resilience he showed afterward. While he’ll be sidelined for now, fans will be watching closely for his return, confident that this setback is just a detour in what’s shaping up to be a promising career.
