Danny Ings Joins Sheffield United on Free Transfer
Former Southampton striker Danny Ings has officially joined Sheffield United, and this move has certainly sparked plenty of interest across English football. The 32-year-old forward, who recently left West Ham United, has signed a one-year deal with the Blades as they aim to push for promotion back to the Premier League.
Now, this is a fascinating story because Ings has been around the block when it comes to English football. He has played at the very top with Liverpool, he’s been a prolific scorer with Southampton, and he’s had stints at Aston Villa and West Ham. But recently, things haven’t quite clicked for him. At West Ham, across two and a half seasons, he managed only five goals and five assists in 69 appearances. That’s not the sort of return fans had expected from a striker of his pedigree.
Sheffield United, on the other hand, are in need of a spark. Last season, they came so close to returning to the Premier League, only to fall short in the play-off final. This season has started poorly too, with four defeats from four matches under their new manager, Ruben Selles, who interestingly also worked with Ings during his time at Southampton. So, bringing in a proven goalscorer like Ings is clearly a move designed to inject some much-needed experience and firepower into the side.

Ings himself seems delighted with the move. He’s spoken about how quickly things developed once he was approached, saying that as soon as he sat down with the manager and met the squad, he knew it was the right opportunity. He emphasized that he has kept himself fit and was waiting for the right challenge, and Sheffield United, in his view, is exactly that.
Looking back at his career, Ings’ most prolific spell came during his time with Southampton, where he scored 41 Premier League goals between 2018 and 2021. In fact, in the 2019/20 season, he netted an incredible 22 league goals, putting him among the top scorers in England that year. That kind of form is what Sheffield United will be hoping he can rediscover.
Interestingly, it’s been over a decade since Ings last played in the Championship, but his record there is excellent. Back in the 2013/14 season with Burnley, he scored 21 goals and helped his team secure promotion. The Blades will be hoping history repeats itself as they chase the same goal this season.
For Ings, this is more than just a new club—it’s a chance at rejuvenation. After a few frustrating years where his role was limited, he now has the opportunity to be the main man again, leading the line for a side desperate to get back into the Premier League. And for Sheffield United, signing a striker with his track record, even if only on a short-term deal, feels like a gamble worth taking.
It’s safe to say, all eyes will be on Danny Ings at Bramall Lane.
