Darwin Núñez Set for Al-Hilal Move as Liverpool Greenlights Talks
So, here’s what’s been going on with Darwin Núñez — and it’s pretty significant. Liverpool have officially given him the green light to enter negotiations with Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal, and it looks like the move could be finalized pretty soon.
Now, Núñez hasn’t exactly been a guaranteed starter under Arne Slot. Last season, despite Liverpool winning the Premier League title, he only started eight league games. So, with that in mind, and considering the heavy investment Liverpool have made in the transfer market this summer, the club seems ready to move on and recoup some of the money they initially spent on him.

Remember, when Núñez joined from Benfica back in 2022, Liverpool paid an initial £64 million — and with add-ons, that figure could’ve gone all the way up to £85 million. That was close to a club record. Naturally, Liverpool have been aiming to get back around £60 million in this deal, but the offer currently on the table from Al-Hilal is said to be around £46 million up front, with additional performance-related bonuses. The final structure of that deal is still being worked out.
Interestingly, Milan and Napoli were also keen on him, but those talks didn’t go far, mainly because of the finances involved. Saudi clubs, on the other hand, have more flexibility in that department, and Al-Hilal have been very intentional about landing Núñez. He’s still just 26, so this would be a big signing for them — not just in terms of talent, but also profile.
At the moment, Núñez is still part of Liverpool’s plans for the upcoming Community Shield match against Crystal Palace. But if the move is confirmed soon, that could change very quickly. He might even meet with Al-Hilal officials at their training camp in Germany if things move forward fast enough.
For Liverpool, this potential sale would push their player sales income beyond £250 million since Richard Hughes took over as sporting director. They’ve already sold Tyler Morton to Lyon for £15 million and might still offload Harvey Elliott and Federico Chiesa. At the same time, they’re continuing to reinvest, with close to £300 million spent this window and a massive £110 million bid still on the table for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak.
All in all, Núñez’s exit — if it happens — marks the end of a rollercoaster spell at Anfield. While he had some explosive moments and managed to score 40 goals during his three seasons, he never fully settled into the system or delivered consistently. But with this move, both parties might be getting exactly what they need — a fresh start.
