Deadly Guacamole Scare Halts Sardinia Festival
What was meant to be a vibrant, flavor-filled celebration in Sardinia has turned into a frightening health crisis. During the popular “Fiesta Latina,” held from July 22 to 24 on the island, at least eight people were left seriously ill — and in some cases, paralysed — after eating guacamole suspected to have been contaminated with a dangerous toxin.
The affected dish was reportedly served from a Mexican food stand at the festival. Early investigations suggest the guacamole may have contained Clostridium botulinum , the bacteria that causes botulism. This rare but severe illness can lead to paralysis, affecting vital functions like breathing and swallowing. It is a medical emergency that can escalate rapidly without prompt treatment.

Among them, an 11-year-old boy’s condition became so severe that he required a tracheotomy to breathe. He was urgently airlifted to Gemelli Hospital in Rome, placed in paediatric intensive care, connected to breathing machines, and incubated. While the tracheotomy procedure was performed to stabilise him and is reversible, his condition remains critical.
Other patients have also faced life-threatening complications. One young woman is in intensive care, while another person remains in the neurology ward. At a separate hospital, a 14-year-old girl is conscious and being monitored, and a 62-year-old woman is relying on mechanical respiration. Each case underscores just how dangerous botulism can be, even from something as seemingly harmless as a taco topping.
Authorities have moved quickly to investigate. Samples of the guacamole have been seized for testing, and results are expected soon. Meanwhile, Italy’s Ministry of Health has issued a recall notice for a specific brand of packaged avocado pulp believed to have been used by the vendor. The festival’s planned continuation in the city of Tortolì has been suspended until the investigation concludes.
While the community waits for official confirmation, the incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly food-borne toxins can turn a joyful gathering into a medical emergency. Guacamole — usually associated with freshness, zest, and color — has instead become linked to a frightening outbreak that no one saw coming.
For now, all eyes are on the health authorities and lab results. If the contamination is confirmed, this case will not only lead to stricter safety measures for food vendors but will also stand as a warning about the importance of vigilance in food handling, especially during large public events. The hope is that all those affected, especially the children, will make a full recovery in the days and weeks ahead.
