Diane Lane and Dylan O’Brien Clash in New ThrillerAnniversary
A new film called Anniversary is already stirring conversations, and the trailer makes it clear why. The story, directed by Jan Komasa, doesn’t just offer family drama—it digs into unsettling questions about loyalty, ideology, and how one family can unravel under pressure. And at the center of it all, we see Diane Lane and Dylan O’Brien locked in an emotional, and at times hostile, clash.

The film follows Josh, played by Dylan O’Brien, who brings home his new girlfriend Liz, portrayed by Bridgerton star Phoebe Dynevor. On the surface, that sounds like a typical setup for family tension, but here’s the twist: Liz isn’t just any girlfriend. She happens to be Ellen’s former student—Ellen being Josh’s mother, played by Diane Lane—and Liz comes with a complicated past that ties directly into a controversial social movement known as “The Change.” What might have begun as an awkward family introduction quickly escalates into suspicion, mistrust, and deep conflict.
From the trailer, we see Ellen voicing sharp concerns about Liz’s presence. At one point, she warns, “Our son’s new girlfriend is a former student. She’s radical in her ideology.” Later, she adds, “I don’t think it’s a coincidence that she’s attached herself to Josh.” These lines suggest that Liz may have more in mind than simply being in love, and the stakes appear to be larger than just family disagreements. The tension reaches a boiling point when Josh fires back at his mother, accusing her of not being able to control Liz the way she controls others, asking her directly, “Can you pretend to be happy for me?” That exchange alone gives a glimpse into the layered family dynamics that drive this film.
But the story stretches beyond just a household struggle. Anniversary hints at broader themes tied to “The Change,” a rising movement shaking the nation within the film’s world. The Taylor family, led by Ellen (Lane) and her husband Paul, played by Kyle Chandler, finds themselves at the crossroads of private fears and public upheaval. Symbols like altered American flags and whispered warnings suggest that Liz’s arrival may be tied to something much larger—and potentially dangerous.
The cast is packed with recognizable names, including Zoey Deutch, Madeline Brewer, McKenna Grace, and Daryl McCormack. Komasa, working from a script by Lori Rosene-Gambino, crafts the story as both a psychological family drama and a chilling political thriller. Diane Lane herself described the project as a “powerful, timely story” that reflects today’s identity struggles through the experience of one fractured family.
Lionsgate is set to release Anniversary in theaters on October 29, just in time for Halloween season, when audiences are craving suspense and dark storytelling. With its mix of family conflict, political intrigue, and unsettling questions about truth and loyalty, the film promises to leave viewers thinking long after the credits roll.
