Hey everyone, some exciting news from the U.S. Open! Canadian tennis stars Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov have both advanced to the second round, continuing Canada’s strong showing in the men’s draw. Both players secured straight-sets victories on Tuesday, showcasing their skill and determination on the hard courts of New York.

Denis Shapovalov, who is seeded 27th in the tournament, was first up on Court 17. He faced Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics and really seemed to find his rhythm early on. The first two sets were competitive, but Shapovalov managed to edge them both 6-4. Once the third set began, momentum swung heavily in his favor. He broke Fucsovics early and quickly established a 3-0 lead. Fucsovics had to take a medical timeout during the set, and it was clear he was struggling physically, which Shapovalov capitalized on. Ultimately, the Canadian closed out the match in style, winning 6-4, 6-4, 6-0. The crowd was firmly behind him, breaking into chants of “Let’s go, Shapo!” throughout. Interestingly, with this win, Shapovalov remains unbeaten at Grand Slam events when leading after two sets, improving to a perfect 28-0. He now looks forward to a second-round matchup against French wild-card Valentin Royer.

Felix Auger-Aliassime, the 25th seed, took the court later the same day, facing a tougher challenge against Britain’s Billy Harris, who entered the tournament as a lucky loser. Auger-Aliassime relied on his powerful serve to navigate through a match with 45 unforced errors, firing 10 aces and winning 74% of his first-serve points. Harris did put up a fight, especially in the second set, where he broke Auger-Aliassime early and led 5-3. But the Canadian bounced back, winning three straight games to push the set to a tiebreaker. Even when trailing 8-7 in the tiebreak, Auger-Aliassime showed resilience, winning the final three points to claim the set. He then closed out the third set 6-4 to secure his straight-sets victory. Next, he will face either French veteran Gael Monfils or Russia’s Roman Safiullin, who played later on Tuesday.

With these wins, all three seeded Canadians in the men’s main draw are now through to the second round, including Gabriel Diallo, who defeated Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia and Herzegovina on Monday. Both Auger-Aliassime and Shapovalov have had strong past performances at the U.S. Open, with Auger-Aliassime reaching the semifinals in 2021 and Shapovalov making it to the quarterfinals in 2020.

It’s been a fantastic day for Canadian tennis fans, with the country’s top players showing their strength and composure on one of the sport’s biggest stages. If they continue this form, a deep run at Flushing Meadows could very well be on the horizon.
