Forwards Festival 2025 Set to Light Up Bristol

Bristol is about to come alive again this bank holiday weekend, as Forwards Festival returns to The Downs for its fourth edition. Since its launch in 2022, the festival has quickly carved out a space as one of the city’s biggest summer highlights. What makes it stand out isn’t just the incredible live music, but also its mix of talks, debates, and cultural conversations that run alongside the performances. It’s not just a music event—it’s been designed as a space for ideas, creativity, and connection.

This year, around 60,000 people are expected to pour into Durdham Downs over two days. The lineup is stacked with talent. Saturday will be headlined by Barry Can’t Swim, the Scottish DJ and producer making serious waves on the electronic scene, and Ezra Collective, the Mercury Prize-winning jazz ensemble that’s been electrifying audiences worldwide. They’ll be joined by big names like Orbital, Confidence Man, English Teacher, and local favourite Katy J Pearson.

Sunday promises just as much excitement. Jorja Smith, the Grammy-nominated British singer whose soulful voice has captivated millions, will take the stage as one of the weekend’s major draws. She’ll be joined by Olivia Dean, The Last Dinner Party, and Bristol’s own Ishmael Ensemble with The Ritual Orchestra and Waldo’s Gift. Originally, US rapper Doechii was set to perform, fresh from her Glastonbury slot, but she had to cancel her appearance earlier this week. Organisers have promised that her absence won’t dim the energy, and a replacement is being arranged.

But Forwards isn’t only about music. The festival puts a lot of emphasis on ideas and conversation, with its dedicated Information Stage. Talks this year will cover climate change, politics, and cultural identity, with voices like comedian Munya Chawawa, broadcaster Carol Vorderman, and MP Zarah Sultana taking part. It’s this combination of entertainment and thought-provoking discussion that sets Forwards apart from many other festivals.

For practicalities, it’s worth noting that Forwards is a city festival, so there’s no camping on site. Instead, shuttle buses will run from Bristol Temple Meads and the city centre up to the Downs, making it easy for festival-goers to get there and back. Tickets for Sunday and weekend passes have already sold out, but Saturday tickets are still available if you’re quick.

Accessibility has been made a priority, with facilities like BSL interpreters, sensory spaces, and induction loops in place. Families are welcome too, though children must be accompanied by adults and older kids will need their own ticket. The event is cashless, so payments for food, drink, and merchandise will need to be made by card or phone.

With a mix of global stars, emerging talent, and powerful conversations, Forwards Festival 2025 is shaping up to be one of the most exciting events on Bristol’s summer calendar. Whether you’re there for the music, the talks, or just the festival atmosphere, the Downs are about to be transformed into something unforgettable.
