Four Men Charged Over Brownlow Medal Betting Scandal
The AFL Brownlow Medal, often called the most prestigious individual honour in Australian rules football, has been overshadowed by controversy, with four men now facing serious charges. These charges stem from alleged suspicious betting activities linked to the 2021 and 2022 awards.
Victoria Police’s Sporting Integrity Intelligence Unit has been investigating this case for years, and the latest development marks a major step forward. According to police, a 34-year-old man from Glenroy, a 32-year-old from Doreen, a 31-year-old from Hadfield, and a 35-year-old from Reservoir have all been charged. Their alleged involvement centres around the use of inside knowledge about the Brownlow Medal voting tallies—information that should never have been accessible outside the AFL’s secure processes.
At the heart of the allegations is a claim that a person with knowledge of how umpires voted in certain AFL matches leaked this information to others. That knowledge was then allegedly used to place bets on outcomes that the general public could not have predicted. For one of the accused men, police allege the information was exploited on 34 separate occasions, leading to 53 individual charges. If proven, the offences carry a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in prison.

To put this in perspective, the Brownlow Medal has always been shrouded in secrecy, with votes locked away until the awards night. That secrecy is what makes the count so dramatic and exciting for fans. In 2021, Port Adelaide’s Ollie Wines claimed the honour, followed by Carlton’s Patrick Cripps in 2022. Importantly, the AFL has stressed that despite the betting scandal, there is no evidence to suggest that the actual outcomes of those awards were influenced or corrupted. The winners, in other words, remain legitimate.
This scandal is not entirely new. Back in 2022, four arrests were made as part of the same investigation. What remains unclear is whether the men now facing charges are the same individuals arrested at that time. The AFL, when asked for comment, acknowledged the charges but said that, because the matter is before the courts, it would not provide further detail.
AFL officials did make it clear during the initial 2022 investigation that the integrity of the Brownlow Medal had not been compromised in terms of who won. Instead, the allegations focus solely on information being leaked and exploited for gambling purposes.
The four men are due to appear before the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on September 11. For the AFL, this case serves as a stark reminder of how crucial it is to protect the integrity of its competitions. For fans, it is a disappointing chapter in what is usually one of the most celebrated traditions of the game.
