Galaxy Hold Off Cruz Azul But Fall in Penalty Shootout Thriller
On Sunday night at Dignity Health Sports Park, the LA Galaxy faced Cruz Azul in a Leagues Cup match that ended in dramatic fashion. Even though it was technically a home game for the Galaxy, the atmosphere said otherwise. The stadium was packed with over 24,000 fans, most of whom were cheering for Cruz Azul, giving the match a real road-game vibe for LA. Galaxy head coach Greg Vanney even admitted it didn’t feel like their own environment despite playing on home turf.
The match was intense and at times almost boiled over into a brawl, especially in the second half. The Galaxy managed to stay composed, though, fighting their way to a 1-1 draw in regulation. The equalizer came late in the 81st minute when Gabriel Pec made a sharp run through the center and connected with a perfectly delivered cross from Mauricio Cuevas, who had just come off the bench 15 minutes earlier. That moment kept the Galaxy alive and gave the home fans something to cheer about.

From there, the match headed into penalties, with each team converting their first five spot kicks. The pressure mounted as sudden death rounds began. Edwin Cerrillo had a chance to seal it but saw his shot saved. Then, in a moment of reprieve, Cruz Azul’s Jesus Orozco hit the crossbar. But the hope didn’t last long—Galaxy defender Emiro Garcés missed his attempt in the ninth round, and Cruz Azul’s Mateo Levy finally ended it, converting the winning penalty to secure an 8-7 shootout victory.
Despite the loss, the Galaxy picked up one point for the draw, bringing their total to four points in the group stage with one match left to play. Coach Vanney noted that getting at least seven points would likely be necessary to advance, so Thursday’s upcoming match against Santos Laguna will be critical.
The match wasn't short on individual performances either. Goalkeeper Novak Mićović came up big late in the game, making a crucial save in the 86th minute to keep LA in it. Joseph Paintsil was a constant threat up front, drawing fouls and nearly scoring in the 76th. Tactical adjustments were made at halftime, with Matheus Nascimento brought on and Marco Reus dropping into midfield to help control the game more effectively.
All in all, while the Galaxy didn’t get the full three points, their grit and determination were on full display. Now all eyes are on their final group stage showdown—everything’s still up for grabs.
