Glen Powell Says “No” to James Bond—And It’s Hilarious
So, there’s been some fun buzz around the next James Bond movie, and one actor has just hilariously removed himself from the running. Glen Powell, the Texas-born star known for Top Gun: Maverick and the upcoming sci-fi action flick The Running Man , was asked about the rumors linking him to the legendary 007 role. And his response? Pure gold.
Powell basically said, “Nope, not happening.” He explained that being a Texan, he feels it just wouldn’t be right for him to play James Bond. He joked that while he could maybe pull off a character named Jimmy Bond, the real James Bond deserves an authentic Brit in that iconic tuxedo. It’s a refreshingly honest and funny take in a sea of actors eager to claim the title.

Now, it’s true that the Bond role hasn’t always been strictly British. Back in 1969, Australian actor George Lazenby stepped into the role for On Her Majesty’s Secret Service , which is still considered by many fans as one of the best Bond films ever made. And even earlier, in 1954, American actor Barry Nelson played Bond in a televised version of Casino Royale . So, while Powell is self-conscious about his Texan roots, the history of Bond shows it’s not entirely unprecedented for non-Brits to take on the spy.
Still, Powell’s reasoning makes sense. He’s got a jam-packed schedule with The Running Man releasing this November and his lead role in the football comedy Chad Powers streaming on Hulu at the end of September. Add the fact that Bond is a role with a certain British charm and legacy, and it’s easy to see why he stepped back.
Meanwhile, speculation about who will be the next 007 continues to swirl. Denis Villeneuve is set to direct, with a script from Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, but no casting decision has been made yet. Names like Tom Holland, Jacob Elordi, and even Taron Egerton have been tossed around, but as Powell pointed out, sometimes it’s better to let the right person, especially a Brit, slip into those shoes.
So for now, Powell fans can enjoy seeing him in his upcoming projects without worrying about him fighting villains with secret volcano lairs. And when the next Bond is finally announced, we’ll all see who truly earns the right to carry on the 007 legacy.
