Glenn Close to Lead Dark Drama ‘Maud’ on Channel 4
Glenn Close has officially stepped into her next major television role, and it’s one that promises to be unforgettable. The eight-time Oscar nominee will star in Maud , a gripping new Channel 4 drama that blends dark comedy with chilling crime. Developed by Playground and Sony Pictures Television, the six-part series is based on Swedish crime writer Helene Tursten’s popular short story collections An Elderly Lady Is Up to No Good and An Elderly Lady Must Not Be Crossed .
The story revolves around Maud Oldcastle, the character Glenn Close will bring to life. On the surface, Maud is described as hilariously brusque, cantankerous, and ruthlessly sharp-witted. But behind those “nice” qualities lies something far more dangerous: she is a calculating killer with a painful past. Having spent much of her life caring for her sister, Maud now seeks a long-overdue second act, determined to claim freedom for herself. Yet her quest for independence is threatened, as a suspicious detective begins to close in and a world built for the young refuses to make space for her. Just how far she will go to protect her freedom is at the center of this twisted tale.

The project is being written by Nina Raine and Moses Raine, known for their acclaimed stage work, and produced by Scott Huff and Colin Callender for Playground. Executive producers include Close herself, alongside the Raine siblings. The series will be produced by Morenike Williams, with filming set to take place in London later this year.
Glenn Close expressed genuine excitement about the role, stating that working with Channel 4, Sony, and Playground on such a distinctive project is an honor. She also highlighted that Maud Oldcastle is unlike any character she has ever portrayed before, calling it a rare and thrilling challenge.
Industry figures have been equally enthusiastic. Gwawr Lloyd, Channel 4’s acting head of drama, described Maud as “deliciously dark and daring” and praised Close for bringing depth and complexity to such an unconventional character. Playground’s Scott Huff emphasized that this is precisely the type of bold, character-driven drama the company strives to create, while Sony Pictures Television president Katherine Pope noted that Close’s unmatched talent would anchor a series filled with razor-sharp writing and gripping themes.
At its core, Maud promises to deliver more than just a crime drama. It is expected to explore modern issues with wit, intelligence, and emotional intensity, all wrapped around a protagonist who defies stereotypes about aging women.
