Grimsby v Man Utd: Carabao Cup Clash Set for August 27
The Carabao Cup second round is bringing an intriguing matchup this week, as Manchester United travel to face Grimsby Town at Blundell Park. On the surface, it may look like a meeting between a global powerhouse and a League Two side, but there is plenty of storyline and drama surrounding this tie.
For United, manager Ruben Amorim has been cautious with his squad selection. One of the main talking points is the fitness of Noussair Mazraoui. The Moroccan defender has not featured since limping off on the final day of last season against Aston Villa. Although he has been edging closer to full fitness and has participated in training drills, Amorim has admitted that his return may have to wait until after the international break. He made it clear in his press conference that the team is not willing to risk another setback by rushing him back too soon.

Lisandro Martinez will also remain sidelined as he continues his recovery from a serious knee injury picked up earlier this year. With the squad stretched, Amorim is expected to rotate, particularly given that United face Burnley in the Premier League just three days later. That means opportunities could open up for players like Benjamin Sesko, who has been pushing for a starting role, as well as youngsters Kobbie Mainoo and Joshua Zirkzee, both of whom are eager to make their first appearances of the new campaign. Andre Onana has already made his return from injury and could feature again to sharpen his match rhythm.
As for Grimsby, they are enjoying a solid start to their season. The Mariners remain unbeaten in their opening six fixtures, although their most recent outing saw them held to a 1-1 draw by Accrington Stanley. Their squad, however, has been hit by injuries. Doug Tharme, Kieran Green, and Jamie Walker all missed the last game, and while captain Danny Rose did return to the bench, his manager David Artell admitted he is still some way off full fitness. Rose was introduced late in the match, but Artell suggested fans should not be surprised if he is eased back slowly rather than rushed into action.
Adding to the local build-up, Grimsby Town announced a ticketing update after it was discovered that a number of home-end tickets had been purchased by Manchester United supporters. In line with EFL regulations, those tickets were cancelled to maintain safety and ensure that home areas remain reserved for Grimsby fans only. The cancelled tickets have been redistributed to Mariners supporters on the waiting list, highlighting just how much demand there is for this tie.
The stage is now set for Wednesday night. United will be expected to progress, but Grimsby, backed by a passionate crowd, will look to cause one of the great upsets in this year’s competition. The atmosphere at Blundell Park is certain to be intense, and with both sides carrying different kinds of pressure, the encounter promises to be one of the more intriguing fixtures of the Carabao Cup’s second round.
