Hazbin Hotel Team Brings Homestuck Back as Animated Pilot

If you’ve been around online fandom spaces in the last decade and a half, you’ve probably at least heard whispers of Homestuck . This sprawling, genre-bending webcomic by Andrew Hussie was first released in 2009 and quickly became a landmark of internet culture—part comic, part animation, part video game, and entirely chaotic in the best way. It built a dedicated, almost mythic fanbase and inspired countless creative projects. The story wrapped in 2016, and while there have been smaller fan-driven spin-offs since, many assumed the saga’s main chapter was closed for good.

That’s why the news out of Animate Orlando this week hit like a meteor in the fandom world. Vivienne “VivziePop” Medrano, the creator behind Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss , revealed that her animation studio SpindleHorse is producing an official Homestuck animated pilot. Yes—the same team that turned their own edgy, colorful, underworld comedy into an internet-to-streaming success is now tackling one of the internet’s most infamous epics.

The announcement came with a teaser trailer and poster, confirming that the pilot will drop this September on Medrano’s own YouTube channel. No full series deal has been locked in yet, but given SpindleHorse’s track record and ongoing relationships with platforms like Amazon Prime Video, there’s already speculation that this could lead to something much bigger.

The creative lineup for the pilot reads like a fandom dream list. Medrano is serving as executive producer, Skye Henwood is directing and writing, Mel Shin is on storyboards, Ben Jones is animation director, and Hone is art director. Veteran voice actor Richard Horvitz—known for roles in Invader Zim and Helluva Boss —is directing the voice performances. The cast includes Toby “Radiation” Fox (creator of Undertale ) as John Egbert, Cherami Leigh as Rose Lalonde, Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Jade Harley, Adam McArthur as Dave Strider, and Brandon Winckler as Karkat Vantas.

It’s a fascinating collaboration, especially considering the parallels between Hussie’s and Medrano’s paths—both creators built massive audiences online before transitioning their work into higher-profile productions. And for many fans, this is more than just nostalgia. The original Homestuck relied heavily on Flash-based animation and interactive features, much of which is now inaccessible or broken online. This adaptation could give new life to a story that has been, for practical reasons, increasingly out of reach for newcomers.

Whether the pilot captures Homestuck ’s dense humor, layered irony, and unpredictable tone remains to be seen. But the combination of SpindleHorse’s animation style and the series’ absurd, world-ending teen adventure premise could make for something wild and memorable. For now, all eyes are on September—when, after nearly a decade, Homestuck will officially return in animated form.
