Hot Weather Today, More Moisture and Showers Coming Tomorrow
Today, the weather across Taiwan has stayed under the strong influence of the Pacific high-pressure system. Clear skies and scorching heat were experienced, with some regions climbing close to 37 degrees. In fact, yesterday’s highest temperature was recorded in northern Taiwan’s Taoyuan Xinwu area, hitting 37.4 degrees. Central Taiwan wasn’t much cooler at around 36 degrees, and the south and east also stayed in the mid-30s. So, it has really been a stretch of relentless heat.
This morning, temperatures dipped slightly before sunrise, settling between 21 and 24 degrees in most low-lying areas. For example, Hualien Shoufeng reported about 21 degrees, while Keelung Qidu was warmer at 24. Even with these cooler early hours, once the sun rises, the heat builds up quickly. Around noon, ultraviolet radiation has been reaching dangerous levels, which means sun protection and hydration are absolutely necessary. People spending long hours outdoors have been reminded to take precautions against heatstroke.

Although today is generally sunny and hot, there has still been some moisture in the air. Afternoon thunderstorms have been possible in the mountains, and sometimes those showers may extend briefly into nearby lowlands. The Hengchun Peninsula and eastern regions have also seen short bursts of rainfall here and there. In short, it’s been a mix of blazing heat with small windows of local rain.
Looking ahead to the next three days, from Monday through Wednesday, conditions will gradually shift. The Pacific high-pressure system will start retreating northward, and as it weakens, more moisture will move into the island. The atmosphere will become unstable, and afternoon convection will intensify. In practical terms, that means stronger localized downpours or thunderstorms are likely after midday, especially in inland or mountainous areas. At other times, occasional light showers may appear in scattered spots, though sunny breaks will still be common.
By Thursday through Saturday, the pattern should ease back into sunnier and hotter weather. Skies will stay mostly clear, but again, mountain areas may develop brief thunderstorms in the afternoon, with a small chance of those spilling into nearby plains.
Meanwhile, tropical disturbances in surrounding waters have caught the attention of meteorologists. One system in the South China Sea has been moving slowly northwest toward Hainan Island, but its chance of strengthening into a typhoon is low and it poses no threat to Taiwan. Another weak disturbance southeast of Taiwan has also been observed drifting northward, but it is moving away from the island. Even if it develops further, Taiwan is unlikely to be impacted. What it does mean, though, is a temporary increase in local moisture through midweek, helping fuel those afternoon showers.
So, in summary: the heat continues today, but starting tomorrow, expect three days with more moisture, more clouds, and greater chances of afternoon thunderstorms. After midweek, the weather will turn drier and sunnier again, though the daily cycle of afternoon showers in mountain regions will remain part of the picture.
