Houston Faces Muggy Weekend With Storms and Street Flooding Risks
If you're in the Houston area today, brace yourself—Mother Nature is mixing things up this weekend. The weather's going to be quite the ride, and not the kind you'd want without an umbrella close by. It’s Saturday, August 2nd, and it looks like the heat and humidity we’re used to in southeast Texas are teaming up with a stalled front just north of us to bring scattered showers and storms throughout the afternoon and evening.
So, what exactly can we expect? Well, as the day moves on, more clouds are rolling in, making things feel even more muggy than usual. Storm chances are picking up, especially later this afternoon through the evening hours. Think between 1 and 6 PM for most of Houston, with the peak window between 5 and 7 PM. And while this won’t be a total washout for everyone, the scattered nature of the storms means they can pop up fast and hit hard.

In fact, any storm that forms could drop a heavy amount of rain in a short period of time. That’s why there’s a 1 in 4 chance—about a 25% risk—for localized street flooding across parts of Southeast Texas. So if you're driving and come across a flooded road, please remember: turn around, don’t drown. It only takes a little bit of water to stall your car or worse.
And while storms are our immediate concern, the bigger tropical picture is fairly quiet for now. Thanks to Saharan dust drifting across the Atlantic, tropical development has been stifled for the time being. There's a weak area of low pressure forming off the Southeast U.S. coast, but it’s only expected to develop slowly, if at all, early next week. Otherwise, things are pretty calm on the hurricane front. But since we're entering the peak of the season—August and September—it’s a good idea to keep your storm preparedness plans fresh.
Looking ahead to next week, the hot and humid pattern sticks around. Expect those mid-to-upper 90s to return, along with chances for isolated afternoon storms continuing into Tuesday.
So to sum it all up: keep the rain gear handy this weekend, be cautious on the roads, and don’t let the clouds catch you by surprise. It’s Houston in August—muggy, stormy, and unpredictable as ever.
