I Tried Tesco and Other Supermarket Cafes—Here’s What Happened

So, I recently decided to revisit the world of supermarket cafes, and let me tell you—it was nothing like I remembered from my childhood. The last time I sat in one, I must have been around 12, enjoying a hot chocolate with all the toppings and a simple ham and cheese toastie. Back then, the choices were basic—maybe a jacket potato or a scone. Fast forward to today, and things have completely changed. Now, cafes at Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, and M&S are offering everything from TikTok-famous Strawberry Iced Matcha Lattes to posh brunch dishes like Eggs Royale. Some of these menus could easily compete with a proper restaurant.

My first stop was M&S in Newport Retail Park, and it immediately impressed me. The staff were welcoming, friendly, and genuinely seemed to care about their regulars. The cafe itself was spotless, and the menu was packed with options, from healthy salads and nourish bowls to indulgent treats. I tried a chicken and pesto crunchy sandwich, a breakfast wrap, a classic jacket potato with cheese and beans, and even the Strawberry Iced Matcha Latte. Surprisingly, the matcha drink won me over—I’ve officially become a fan. The only downside? It was pricey. My lunch cost around £22 for a few items, though the kids’ menu was a very reasonable £4.50.

Next was Tesco, which was buzzing with activity. The variety on offer was impressive—everything from chicken burgers and fries to full English breakfasts. I went for the big breakfast, which included fried bread, sausages, eggs, beans, hash browns, and bacon. It was filling, tasty, and reasonably priced at £9.50, with portions so generous they could easily serve two. The staff were friendly, service was fast, and the cafe was clean. Another matcha latte here confirmed that my new obsession was not a fluke.

Morrisons came in third. The menu was a bit more humble, but value for money was excellent. Classics like fish and chips, bangers and mash, and steak pies were all affordable, with kids eating for free with an adult meal. Portion sizes were generous, the cafe was busy but clean, and the staff were welcoming. For families, this was a strong contender.

Finally, Asda was a disappointment. The cafe was dirty, tables were sticky, and much of the hot food menu wasn’t available due to staff shortages. My panini and carrot cake were underwhelming at best, though the staff tried their best and kids’ meals were very cheap at £1.

Overall, M&S and Tesco have transformed supermarket cafes into enjoyable dining experiences, Morrisons offers great family value, and Asda… well, it’s one I won’t be returning to anytime soon.
