Jaime King Faces $100K Legal Fee Dispute Amid Divorce Turmoil
Actress Jaime King is once again in the headlines, and this time, it’s not for a new role. The “Black Summer” and “Hart of Dixie” star is being pursued for an unpaid legal bill that totals nearly $100,000. According to court documents obtained by Us Weekly , King had been ordered in 2024 to pay her ex-husband Kyle Newman’s legal fees after their split. The amount—$98,441.16 plus $2,000 in interest—was to be settled within 30 days, with the judge noting it was appropriate for her, as the higher earner, to cover those costs.
The law firm representing Newman, Wasser, Cooperman & Mandles, has now taken steps to collect the debt. They’ve requested that King appear in court to provide information about her assets and bank accounts. If she fails to attend, she could face arrest.

A spokesperson for King, however, insisted this came as a complete surprise to her and her current legal team. They stated that she had never been made aware of this filing until now. They also pointed to the intense financial and emotional strain she has been under throughout what they described as an unnecessarily aggressive divorce. According to them, King has faced years of legal intimidation and fear tactics while focusing on protecting her children and rebuilding stability in her life.
King and Newman separated in 2020 after almost 13 years of marriage, initially agreeing to share custody of their two sons, James and Leo. But custody arrangements shifted dramatically in March of this year when Newman was awarded primary custody. King was granted shared legal custody with supervised visits three days a week, and her custody rights could expand only after completing a six-month drug and alcohol program followed by weekly testing.
Around the same period, King faced another major challenge—being forced to move out of her Los Angeles home after her landlord sued for more than $42,000 in unpaid rent. She cited financial hardship, compounded by the Los Angeles wildfires that came dangerously close to her residence, prompting mandatory evacuations. She eventually reached an agreement to vacate the property within weeks.
The spokesperson for King urged for compassion and privacy during this difficult chapter, emphasizing her commitment to her children’s well-being and a peaceful resolution to ongoing disputes. Meanwhile, the legal fee battle adds yet another layer to what has been a prolonged and highly publicized personal struggle.
It’s a sobering reminder that behind the glamour of Hollywood, the reality can be a storm of court orders, financial strain, and emotional upheaval—especially when a marriage unravels so publicly.
