Jets Could Be the Perfect Landing Spot for Tommy DeVito

It’s funny how sometimes the most obvious solutions are right in front of us, but nobody notices until the timing makes it crystal clear. That might be the case with New York Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito and the New York Jets.

Right now, DeVito is sitting pretty low on the Giants’ depth chart. After the team went out and signed Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, then drafted rookie Jaxson Dart, the quarterback room suddenly became packed. Add DeVito to the mix and you’re talking about four quarterbacks — and let’s be honest, no NFL team carries four on the active roster. It’s almost certain that DeVito will be released by the Giants later this month, with the intention of re-signing him to the practice squad. But here’s the twist — the Jets may not let that happen.

The Jets are in a tough spot right now with their own quarterback depth. Tyrod Taylor just had a knee scope, rookie Brady Cook is sidelined with an ankle injury, and the team was forced to bring in free agents Nathan Peterman and C.J. Beathard for tryouts. That’s not exactly an inspiring list of options. Meanwhile, across the field during the Jets-Giants preseason matchup at MetLife Stadium, DeVito was right there, waiting for an opportunity. Sometimes the perfect match really does come down to timing, and this feels like one of those cases.

DeVito isn’t a superstar, but he’s not just a camp arm either. Giants fans know him as “Tommy Cutlets,” a hometown player who turned into a bit of a cult hero last season when injuries forced him into action. In six starts as a rookie, he held his own — completing over 60 percent of his passes, throwing eight touchdowns against only three interceptions, and even notching a few wins for a struggling Giants team. He’s accurate, poised, and steady enough to be a reliable QB2 or QB3. That’s exactly what the Jets need right now.

And here’s the thing — if the Giants try to sneak DeVito through waivers to get him back on their practice squad, it’s highly unlikely he clears. Teams like the Titans, who are still figuring out their backup situation, are already being mentioned as potential landing spots. The Jets would be wise to act quickly and make a claim. Not only would DeVito fill a glaring need for them, but it would also give him a clearer path to playing time than what he has with the Giants.

It would be bittersweet for Giants fans to see him go, no doubt. He’s a local kid who embraced the spotlight and became a fan favorite almost overnight. But the NFL is a business, and this might just be the best career move for him. With the Jets facing quarterback uncertainty and DeVito likely getting cut by the Giants anyway, the stars may be aligning for both sides.

Sometimes opportunity knocks — and in this case, it might be wearing green and white instead of blue.
