Jimmy Fallon Scores Post-Sunday Night Football Specials
NBC is once again betting on football to boost late-night TV, and this time Jimmy Fallon is right in the middle of the play. It’s been announced that The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon will be given four special airings directly after Sunday Night Football this season. This is a notable move, because last year the show tried it once, and the experiment must have paid off well enough for NBC to expand it into a small tradition.

So here’s the schedule: the first special episode is set for September 21, right after the Kansas City Chiefs take on the New York Giants. Then on October 26, the show will follow the Green Bay Packers vs. Pittsburgh Steelers matchup. After that, November 16 will bring another one, this time after the Detroit Lions vs. Philadelphia Eagles game. And finally, on December 7, Fallon will return after the Houston Texans face off against—once again—the Kansas City Chiefs. Yes, that means two of the four specials are banking on Chiefs games. Given the ongoing buzz around Travis Kelce and his high-profile relationship with Taylor Swift, the strategy seems very intentional.
NBC isn’t shy about leaning into the pop culture crossover of sports, music, and celebrity. Fallon himself has ties to Swift’s social circle, and it’s no secret that nearly every brand out there is looking for a piece of the so-called “Swift effect.” So the Chiefs’ involvement feels less like a coincidence and more like a calculated ratings play.
What’s going to set these episodes apart is the guest lineup. The network is aiming for “high-profile” bookings that can appeal to the broad football audience sticking around after the game. For the first night on September 21, Matthew McConaughey and country star Eric Church are confirmed. McConaughey, of course, is an Oscar-winning actor with major mainstream appeal, and Church represents the kind of country-music crossover that resonates with many NFL fans. Whether that pairing screams “must-see” or not is up for debate, but the attempt to match the energy of the football crowd is clear.
Behind the scenes, showrunner Chris Miller described teaming up with Sunday Night Football as a highlight for the Tonight Show team. He pointed out that Fallon and company have always loved tapping into sports culture, and these specials give them a chance to ride the wave of one of TV’s biggest weekly events.
Still, there’s an underlying reality to all of this: late-night TV has been under constant pressure, with declining viewership and questions about the format’s future. By piggybacking on the NFL, NBC is essentially looking for ways to keep Fallon in front of as many eyes as possible, even if only for a few extra nights. Whether these specials will create real momentum or just provide a temporary ratings bump remains to be seen, but for now, Fallon fans can expect some prime-time pigskin-powered comedy coming their way this fall.
