John Goodman Sells His Garden District Mansion but Stays in New Orleans
So, here’s the scoop—John Goodman’s gorgeous Garden District mansion in New Orleans has officially found a buyer. But before anyone starts panicking, no, the beloved actor isn’t packing up and leaving the Crescent City. His realtor made that crystal clear.
This sale comes after the asking price was trimmed down earlier this year—from $5.45 million to $4.75 million—which seemed to do the trick. The home, tucked away on Coliseum Street just a couple of blocks from St. Charles Avenue, has been under contract according to Zillow.
Goodman, now 73, and his wife Anna Beth have quite a history with this place. They bought the stately 1850s property back in 2005 from none other than Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor, paying $1.8 million at the time. The couple raised their daughter in this home, known as the Joseph Merrick Jones House. But as their broker Hyatt Hood put it, they were just looking to “downsize a bit.”
While Hood wouldn’t spill whether he helped them snag another property, he confirmed that the couple has no plans to leave the city they’ve loved for decades. In his words, “They consider New Orleans home.”

And what a home they’ve been selling—it’s a beauty. Four bedrooms, five bathrooms, a grand staircase, a saltwater pool, and even a dining room with hand-painted hardwood floors. The whole property radiates that old New Orleans charm with just enough modern touches to make it irresistible.
For Goodman, New Orleans isn’t just where he lives—it’s been part of his story since the 1970s. A St. Louis native, he first fell in love with the city during a Mardi Gras trip in 1972 with some college buddies. He once told Garden & Gun magazine that he “just flipped for the city” and never quite figured out why—though maybe that’s part of its magic. Ever since, whenever he had a little extra cash, he’d make his way back down.
Of course, fans know Goodman best as Dan Conner from Roseanne , but locals also remember his turn in HBO’s Treme , where he played a character deeply tied to post-Katrina New Orleans. He’s been a part of the city’s cultural fabric for nearly 30 years, moving there in the mid-1990s and immersing himself fully into the community.
So yes, the Garden District mansion may soon have a new owner, but John Goodman isn’t going anywhere. New Orleans has been his home for decades, and from the sound of it, that’s not changing anytime soon.
