Josh Hutcherson’s Rescue Dogs Inspire a Nationwide Mission
Before he ever stood in front of cameras to advocate for shelter animals, Josh Hutcherson simply walked into a shelter as someone looking for a furry friend. What happened next didn’t just bring two wagging tails into his home — it completely changed his life. He adopted Manchi and Driver, two rescue dogs who would go on to become his loyal companions through movie sets, red carpets, and the chaos of Hollywood life. According to Josh, that moment opened his heart in ways he never expected and sparked a passion for helping shelter pets everywhere.

Best known for playing Peeta Mellark in The Hunger Games , Josh has always gravitated toward stories about underdogs. Now, he’s channeling that same spirit into a real-life mission. Teaming up with Hill’s Pet Nutrition, he’s lending his voice — and his time — to the Clear The Shelters campaign, the largest pet adoption and donation drive in the U.S. It’s not just about publicity for him; it’s about creating real, lasting change for animals who deserve a second chance.
Recently, his journey from adopter to advocate came full circle during a visit to Pasadena Humane, a long-time Hill’s partner. There, he met Lula, a dog rescued from the devastating LA wildfires, and Catnip, an energetic kitten waiting patiently for her forever home. Encounters like these, he says, remind him why this cause matters so deeply.
The need is urgent. According to Hill’s 2025 State of Shelter Pet Adoption Report, 5.8 million cats and dogs entered U.S. shelters in the past year. Even with a slight decline in intake, shelters remain overcrowded, with over 103,000 more animals taken in during 2024 than were adopted out. For many pets, time is running short unless more people step forward to help.
Josh’s message is simple: if you can adopt, now’s the perfect time. This August, Hill’s is offering adoption kits — complete with starter food, supplies, and coupons — at select shelters. For those who can’t commit to adoption right now, fostering is encouraged as a crucial bridge for pets until permanent homes are found. And even for those unable to take an animal in, donations are a lifeline. Through September 15, Josh and Hill’s will match donations up to $25,000 via ClearTheSheltersFund.org, with proceeds benefiting shelters nationwide.
As Josh puts it, “I hope anyone thinking about adoption opens their hearts to these deserving animals.” It’s a hope shaped by the unconditional love of two rescue dogs who grounded him in the whirlwind of fame — and now, it’s a hope he’s turning into a movement that could change countless lives, both human and animal.
