Julian Sayin Shines, Houston Healing, and Buckeyes’ Defense Dominates Camp Day 3
Alright, let’s talk about the Buckeyes and what went down during their third and final open practice before the season kicks off on August 31st. If you're an Ohio State fan, there’s a lot to feel optimistic about after Day 3 of camp—especially if you're watching the quarterback battle or wondering how the defense is shaping up.
Let’s start with the quarterbacks. Julian Sayin, the former five-star prospect, really stole the spotlight on Saturday. He looked sharp—probably the best we’ve seen from him yet in camp. He connected nicely with Jeremiah Smith on a few plays, including a standout throw across the field that showed off that highly touted arm strength. He even tossed a touchdown to Smith during team drills. But in true young-quarterback fashion, Sayin had a rookie moment right after the score—he made a poor read and threw a ball right into the chest of defensive back Bryce West, who thankfully didn’t come down with it. Still, it was a reminder that Sayin, while extremely talented, is still developing.
Lincoln Kienholz, meanwhile, had a steady day. He didn’t have any big “wow” plays, but he also didn’t make mistakes. He’s definitely still in the mix. It feels like Sayin might be pulling slightly ahead, but this QB battle isn’t over—not by a long shot.

Now onto the defense—talk about dominance. Even with standout defensive tackle Eddrick Houston sidelined with a knee brace, the defensive line was absolutely flying. Tywone Malone, who transferred in from Ole Miss, had his best showing of camp. He made life tough for the offensive line in both one-on-one and team drills. Kayden McDonald was everywhere, and Kenyatta Jackson was nearly unstoppable as a pass rusher. Add in Jason Moore getting his hands on multiple passes, and it’s clear this unit is coming together fast.
Houston, by the way, looked good in rehab. No contact yet, but he was moving well and it doesn’t seem like his injury will keep him out long. That’s huge, especially since Ohio State’s depth at defensive tackle is still coming into form.
And don’t overlook the young guns. Freshman Epi Sitanilei made a strong impression, wearing J.T. Tuimoloau’s old number and even forcing a fumble during 11-on-11. In the secondary, freshman Devin Sanchez had an interception, and Davison Igbinosun forced a fumble. It’s clear this defensive unit is focused on creating turnovers—something Ohio State needed more of last season.
As for the offense, running back James Peoples broke loose for a 20-yard run, showing great burst. C.J. Donaldson, the transfer from West Virginia, looks solid, and true freshman Anthony “Turbo” Rogers—despite a fumble—is already showing that elite speed.
Add in strong performances from tight ends like Max Klare and Jelani Thurman, and there’s a lot to be excited about. Even left tackle Ethan Onianwa, who’s slimmed down and looking like a future first-rounder, is anchoring an offensive line that’s still experimenting but trending upward.
Bottom line? The Buckeyes are building something serious. The quarterback competition is heating up, the defense looks tough, and young talent is stepping up. It’s early, but Saturday gave fans plenty of reasons to believe this team could be a real contender this fall.
