Lions Edge Ticats in Overtime Thriller

It was one of those CFL nights where momentum swung like a pendulum, and the BC Lions found themselves on the winning side after an intense back-and-forth battle with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The final blow came in overtime, when Sean Whyte’s steady right leg delivered a 20-yard field goal, sealing a 41–38 victory.

The game’s drama really ramped up late. Hamilton had the first possession in overtime, but a costly fumble by Tim White — recovered by former Ticat DeWayne Hendrix — flipped the script instantly. That turnover handed the Lions prime field position, and Whyte calmly finished the job.

But getting to overtime was no small feat. In the dying moments of regulation, Hamilton kicker Marc Liegghio forced the extra frame with a clutch 29-yard field goal, this after BC quarterback Nathan Rourke had orchestrated a brilliant seven-play, 85-yard drive, finding James Butler for a 16-yard touchdown to take the lead with less than a minute remaining.

It was a night filled with fireworks on both sides. Rourke was electric, throwing for 408 yards and two touchdowns — one to Butler, one to Jevon Cottoy — and adding another score on the ground through backup QB Jeremiah Masoli. Butler himself had a strong showing against his former team, punching in a rushing touchdown as well.

Hamilton’s Bo Levi Mitchell countered with 305 passing yards and three touchdowns to Shemar Bridges, Kiondré Smith, and Jevoni Robinson. The Ticats also lit up the crowd early when Isaiah Wooden tore through the field on an 84-yard punt return touchdown — his third of the season.

The game was a rollercoaster of turnovers, big plays, and missed opportunities. Both Whyte and Liegghio saw long field goal streaks snapped. Hamilton’s defence came up big in the fourth quarter with a Julian Howsare interception, setting up points that seemed to tilt the game their way. But BC refused to fold, with Rourke converting critical long-yardage situations in the final drive of regulation, keeping their hopes alive.

At halftime, Hamilton honoured Hall of Fame offensive lineman Miles Gorrell by adding him to their Wall of Fame, and hometown NBA star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was celebrated for his record-breaking season — but on the field, the Lions stole the spotlight.

With the win, BC snapped a two-game skid and avenged their loss to Hamilton just two weeks earlier. The Ticats, meanwhile, saw their six-game winning streak come to an end. Now, Hamilton heads to Regina to face the Roughriders on August 16, while BC returns home that same day to host the Montreal Alouettes.

In the end, it was a game that had everything: explosive offence, gritty defence, emotional swings, and a finish worthy of highlight reels — all decided by one well-placed kick in overtime.
