Lions End Preseason Against Texans with TeSlaa Shining
Hey, let’s talk about the Detroit Lions’ preseason finale against the Houston Texans. The game wrapped up on Saturday, August 23, at Ford Field, and it wasn’t the result Lions fans were hoping for—they were defeated 26-7. Despite the loss, there were a few bright spots worth highlighting.
The lone touchdown for Detroit was scored by rookie wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa. It was a 33-yard reception that came early in the game, delivered on a beautiful throw by quarterback Kyle Allen down the right sideline. That makes it three straight preseason games in which TeSlaa has found the end zone, showing that he’s quickly becoming a reliable target. TeSlaa, standing 6-foot-4 and weighing 214 pounds, combines size, speed, and soft hands—attributes that should make him a contributor not just on offense but also on special teams once the regular season kicks off.

The Texans, on the other hand, were able to score through a mix of running and passing plays. Touchdowns were recorded by running back Woody Marks and wide receivers Quintez Cephus and Daniel Jackson, and kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn added two field goals, one from 53 yards and another from 48. Overall, Detroit was out-gained on offense 399 yards to 186, and the time of possession heavily favored Houston, 40 minutes to just under 20 for the Lions.
On the quarterback front, Kyle Allen got the start and played the first two series. His performance was perfect for the short stint: 5-for-5 passing for 66 yards and that touchdown, ending with a 158.3 passer rating. Allen has had a strong training camp and finished the preseason with 401 passing yards, five touchdowns, and a passer rating of 123.6. Hendon Hooker handled most of the game afterward, completing six of 11 passes for 70 yards but threw one interception, finishing with a 36.2 rating. He also added a 25-yard rush, showing some versatility.
Defensively, there were promising performances from linebacker Trevor Nowaske and safety Loren Strickland, both recording nine tackles each, with Strickland adding a tackle for loss. The defense was challenged by Houston’s offense, but individual efforts like these stood out. Unfortunately, linebacker Ezekiel Turner left the game in the third quarter with a right leg injury and did not return.
Now the focus for the Lions’ front office is on trimming the roster down to 53 players by Tuesday and then forming the 16-man practice squad. The preseason may be over, but the real work is just beginning. The regular season opener at Green Bay is set for Sunday, September 7 at 4:25 p.m., and everyone will be watching to see how these preseason standouts translate once the games start to count.
In short, while the final preseason score wasn’t ideal, there were flashes of what could be a promising season. Isaac TeSlaa’s continued production, Allen’s efficiency, and the defensive highlights offer reasons for optimism as the Lions head into Week 1.
