Luka Dončić Makes EuroBasket History With Triple-Double

Luka Dončić delivered another unforgettable performance on Sunday, and history was made in the process. In Slovenia’s 86–69 win over Belgium, Dončić notched 26 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists, becoming only the fourth player ever to record a triple-double in EuroBasket history. What makes this even more remarkable is the pressure under which it happened. Slovenia had dropped its first two games, including a tough loss to France despite Dončić pouring in 39 points the night before. With elimination looming, a win was absolutely required, and Dončić responded in the way only he can.

It wasn’t just the numbers that stood out—it was the timing. Slovenia needed a spark to keep its tournament alive, and Dončić’s all-around brilliance set the tone. In fact, through three games of EuroBasket 2025, he has been averaging an eye-popping 33 points, nearly 10 assists, over seven rebounds, and more than three steals per contest. For a player who just signed a $155 million extension with the Los Angeles Lakers this summer, the decision to play in EuroBasket had raised eyebrows. The Lakers had just made him their centerpiece, especially with LeBron James nearing the twilight of his career. Still, Dončić was determined to represent his country, and the Lakers organization has stood firmly behind him.

The support has even been visible in person. Lakers team governor Jeanie Buss and president Rob Pelinka made the trip overseas to watch him play. Pelinka made it clear there were “zero problems” with Luka suiting up for Slovenia, noting that it was important to see him in great shape, enjoying the game, and continuing to grow as a leader. That vote of confidence mattered even more after a brief scare earlier in the summer when Dončić banged knees during an exhibition. He left the floor but ultimately avoided any major injury, which had temporarily fueled concern about his availability for the NBA season.

Slovenia’s path forward is still challenging. Wins in the remaining group games, starting with Iceland next, are needed to secure advancement. But with Luka leading the way, history already written, and his momentum building, the confidence of his teammates and fans couldn’t be higher. For Slovenia, and for the Lakers watching from afar, this looks like only the beginning of another remarkable chapter in Luka Magic’s story.
