Maisie Smith and Max George’s Holiday Cut Short by Fire, Forced to Go ‘Off Grid’
So, here’s the story: Maisie Smith, the EastEnders star, and her boyfriend Max George recently went through a pretty scary and unexpected situation while on holiday in the South of France. They had planned a nice getaway, but right before they arrived, the holiday home they booked caught fire and was completely destroyed. Luckily, they hadn’t gotten there yet, so thankfully no one was hurt, but it did throw their whole trip into chaos.
Maisie opened up about the ordeal during a chat on the show Sunday Brunch. The hosts, Tim Lovejoy and Simon Rimmer, were curious why Maisie had been unreachable for a bit and heard she had “gone off grid.” They wanted to know what was going on, and it turned out the reason was far from a digital detox or intentional break. Instead, it was because their holiday house had been wiped out by this sudden fire.

Since the original plan was no longer an option, Maisie and Max had to scramble and find somewhere else to stay. They ended up booking an Airbnb nearby, not too far from where they were supposed to be. But Maisie made it clear that the replacement accommodation wasn’t exactly ideal for her. She described the alternative as being by a fishing lake — a spot where her boyfriend fished but she clearly wasn’t very into it. So, it wasn’t the dream holiday vibe she had hoped for.
When Tim asked if all their equipment was lost in the fire, Maisie said no, thankfully, because they hadn’t even arrived yet. She also joked about not really being the fishing type, though Max enjoyed it. The hosts sensed she wasn’t thrilled about the whole experience and cheekily pointed out that if you like fishing, it might have been okay — but otherwise, maybe not so much.
Maisie and Max’s relationship is quite sweet. They met back in 2020 on Strictly Come Dancing and started dating a couple of years later. This unexpected holiday disaster certainly put a strain on what should have been a relaxing break, but it sounds like they managed to make the best of a difficult situation.
All in all, it was a pretty frightening experience for them both, being forced off grid and uprooted by a fire at the last minute. But thankfully, they were safe, and it’s definitely a story to remember — a reminder that even planned holidays can take unexpected turns.
