Mateo Joseph Seals Season-Long Loan Move to Mallorca
It’s been confirmed that Leeds United striker Mateo Joseph has completed a season-long loan move to La Liga side Mallorca. The 21-year-old, who has been with Leeds since his switch from Espanyol in January 2022, has made 73 first-team appearances and scored six goals for the Whites. Earlier this year, in January 2024, he committed his future to the club with a new contract running until 2028. But despite that long-term deal, his future took a different turn this summer.
According to Leeds boss Daniel Farke, Joseph made it clear he wanted a return to Spain. In fact, he declined to join the squad for pre-season trips to Sweden and Germany, choosing instead to focus on securing a move to his homeland. Several clubs, including Real Betis and Girona, were reportedly interested, but Leeds rejected offers that included an obligation to buy. The club still sees him as a player with significant potential and is not in a rush to sell, preferring to reassess his development next summer.

Mallorca, who finished 10th in La Liga last season, became the final destination for this loan deal — and crucially, there’s no permanent option attached. For Joseph, this represents a chance to get consistent top-flight minutes in Spain, a valuable step in his growth as a forward. For Leeds, it’s an opportunity to let one of their young assets gain experience at a competitive level while keeping him under contract for the long term.
Farke and the Leeds hierarchy seem content with the outcome — Joseph gets his wish to play in Spain, while the club retains control over his future. The hope will be that a year in La Liga sharpens his skills, boosts his confidence, and gives him the competitive edge needed to return and make a bigger impact at Elland Road.
Meanwhile, Leeds’ recruitment work hasn’t stopped. The club is still exploring options for reinforcements across several positions, including full-backs, wingers, attacking midfielders, and strikers. One name linked with the Whites is Liverpool’s 19-year-old winger Ben Doak. While Liverpool have reportedly turned down bids of around £20 million in the past and still value him at that price, Leeds are believed to have expressed genuine interest.
For now, the focus shifts to Joseph’s new chapter at Mallorca. He will be stepping into a league and environment that suits his style, surrounded by the pace, technicality, and tactical variety of Spanish football. Whether this year abroad becomes a springboard back into Leeds’ starting XI or a stepping stone to a permanent move elsewhere remains to be seen. What’s certain is that both club and player will be watching closely to see how this loan shapes his career.
