Max Muncy Returns as Dodgers Lose Tommy Edman to Injury Again

Big news out of L.A. for Dodgers fans — it’s a bit of a mixed bag. Max Muncy is back on the field, but the team also took a hit, literally and figuratively, with Tommy Edman heading back to the injured list. It's one of those "good news, bad news" days for the Dodgers.

Let’s start with Muncy. If you remember, he went down hard back on July 2 after a nasty collision at third base during a tag play. The initial fear? That his season might actually be done. The impact from that slide left him with a pretty painful bone bruise on his left knee. It wasn’t pretty. There was no structural damage, which was a relief, but even so, the initial recovery timeline was about six weeks.

Well, Muncy beat that estimate. He worked hard through rehab, even had a short stint in Triple-A Oklahoma City, and on Monday night, he was back at third base and hitting fifth for the Dodgers. It’s been just over a month since the injury, and getting him back is a big deal — he’d been heating up before going down, with a .287 average, 13 homers, and an OPS north of .830.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was clearly glad to have him back, pointing out how much Muncy lengthens the lineup. And while Muncy went 0-for-3 in his return, he did draw a walk and looked solid on defense. He knows it may take a few games to get back in rhythm, especially facing tough pitching like Sonny Gray, but just being out there is a win for the team.

Unfortunately, the celebration was short-lived, because right as Muncy was reactivated, Tommy Edman was placed on the 10-day injured list — again — with a sprained right ankle. This isn’t the first time Edman’s dealt with that ankle this season. He first tweaked it back in May, and now he’s aggravated it again while running the bases in Sunday’s game against Tampa Bay. You could see him hobbling as he rounded first, and sure enough, he was pulled and replaced immediately.

It’s a tough loss. Edman hasn’t been red-hot offensively — he’s hitting just .228 overall — but his versatility on defense is huge. He’s played second, third, and even center field this year. With him out, rookie Alex Freeland and veteran Miguel Rojas are expected to pick up the slack, at least for now.

Other injuries are still a concern too. Hyeseong Kim, Kiké Hernández, and rookie Roki Sasaki are all on the shelf, although there’s some hope Kim and Sasaki could return soon. So while Muncy’s return is a bright spot, the Dodgers are still juggling a lot as they push toward the postseason.
