McCaskey Family Vows to Keep Ownership of the Chicago Bears ‘Until the Second Coming’
Hey, so there’s some interesting news about the Chicago Bears and the family that owns them — the McCaskeys. George McCaskey, the chairman of the Bears, recently made it very clear that his family has absolutely no plans to sell the team anytime soon. In fact, their commitment runs deep and feels almost like a family legacy they want to preserve forever.
This all came out just after a pretty big valuation of the Bears franchise, which is now estimated to be worth a whopping $8.8 billion. That number came to light during a recent transaction involving a tiny 2% ownership stake that was previously held by the late Andrew McKenna. That stake was split between the McCaskeys and the Ryan family — another minority owner group in the team. To give you the numbers, the McCaskeys still own around 77.5% of the team, while the Ryans own the rest.

George didn’t want to get into the nitty-gritty of that specific deal, but what he emphasized was how strongly the McCaskey family feels about keeping the Bears in their hands. He gave a shout-out to his late mother, Virginia Halas McCaskey, who passed away earlier this year at the incredible age of 102. Virginia was the daughter of George Halas, the founder of the Bears back in 1920, so the family connection runs way back — almost a century now.
George shared a really heartfelt message about how Virginia led the family, saying she gave them the “game plan” and coached them up, and now it’s their job to carry that forward. He even quoted his brother Pat, saying their plan is to own the Bears “until the second coming,” while George himself hopes it will be for at least another 100 years. The key takeaway is that the family wants to stick together and keep the Bears under their control — and as George put it, the Halas-McCaskey family “was, is and will remain what the NFL calls the controlling owner.”
This season will be a bit emotional too, since it’s the first one without Virginia’s presence. George admitted it will be an adjustment, especially as the Bears get ready to play their preseason opener against the Miami Dolphins at Soldier Field. But he also expressed confidence that her leadership and guidance have set the family on a strong path.
So yeah, despite the high valuation and ownership changes with small stakes, the McCaskey family’s love and loyalty to the Bears remains rock solid. They’re not just running a business; they’re preserving a legacy that started a hundred years ago and looks like it’s here to stay for the foreseeable future.
